Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—Cuaquito is the youngest of five ducklings that have just hatched. Mama Duck waits for them to grow big enough to swim in the pond, but they are afraid to take the big plunge. One by one, the little ones gather enough courage to jump into water and swim to their mother. A guide at the bottom of the pages prompts youngsters to count how many ducklings are in the pond at that moment. While the story is a bit text-heavy for the board-book format, the bright illustrations and counting theme make it an enjoyable read for parents to share with their own little ones.—Erica Kindrick, Yolo County Library, CA

At first, disappointed at length, knew 9 mos Baby couldn't sit through the story, which when translated becomes too many syllables for her age. Then I kept simplifying it and now huge hit at 11 mos. Called Little Quack a little duck (Patito), omitted sibling duck names opting instead for numbers of ducks, omitted some pond and jumping in descriptions and emphasized mama ducks' repetitive phrasing in excited tones rather than varying it even slightly. When baby antsy, added quacking sounds when mama duck speaks. Had to be patient for her to get used to sitting long enough through all the pages but knew it was a hit when she began to call for mama, with the accent, whenever she spotted the book, and because she likes to just sit and flip through the pages. Illustrations are rich, colorful, large enough and amazingly done. With changes it flows quickly enough for her attention. When she is older, we will begin to add in more words, so expect this excellent illustrated, well made book to last a while. Check out the other translated book on little ribbit. She loves that one, too, also simplified. Unfortunately, not all in series have been translated. Now a great fan. Gave only 4 stars because may not be able to keep even 18 mo old attention span with story length (translation makes it longer) but listed in book choices for ages for 0 to 2.

We love the book! The translation is extraordinary (hint: Cuac-u-ladora) and the story itself is very nice. We love the drawings too!

In a world in which books translated in to Spanish are typically lacking in strength, this little book almost makes up for the rest.

This is a cute book about ducks jumping from their nest into the water to following their mama. It helps my 3-year-old son learn about what to expect next in the book as well as the number at the bottom of the page, which reinforce counting. My son is learning to read, but this book is not for beginners--though my son loves having this book read to him.

Cute. Pictures are kind of repetitive but overall a good book to read in Spanish to a young child. Wish author would have given ideas to expand the duck or pond theme at the end. It would have elevated it to anther level.

Great pictures and lovely story. However, my son is only one and it is a longer story. He like the books with short sentences. He still like to look at the pictures and count the ducks.
