Book Description

January 1994
In this book, Adam Kufeld presents a photographic portrait of Cuba - one of the last remaining communist worlds. In 100 colour photographs - neon-lit night-life in Havana; alienated youth at an amusement arcade; men and women, young and old, queuing for food; youths showing their support for revolution by carrying posters of Fidel Castro; religious altars in commemoration of famous saints; men harvesting tobacco - he shows us that he has no illusions about Cuba. For him it is neither a workers' paradise nor a communist hell. Instead it is a land of contrasts and contradictions, of hope and resignation, of great creativity and corruption.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kufeld, whose travels to this mysterious land date back to 1976, when he was a member of the Venceremos Brigade, has assembled 107 of his full-color photographs, which beautifully document one of the world's last remaining Communist countries. Kufeld writes in his notes that he hopes to show everyday life in Cuba to reinforce a belief that people are people, no matter where they live. He has succeeded; his photographs show the Cuban people, young and old, tending to their jobs, families, education, survival, leisure, entertainment, and simple survival. Kufeld shows the reader both the ubiquitous political side of Cuba and its religious element. He illustrates the highly industrious nature of the people, who are shown in long lines as they suffer under heavy rationing because the island has lost its close Soviet and Eastern European allies. The book is a human look into an unknown land, as well as a fine collection of vibrant and expressive photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Camera Lens Captures the Cuban World Wonderfully, November 6, 2000
This review is from: Cuba (Hardcover)
The fall of communism affected Cuba much like the stock market crash of 1929 affected the USA. From relative prosperity prior 1990 to economic disaster. How would this affect the life and spirit of Cubans? This is what Adam Kufeld want to know, and see, thus in 1991, after a 15 year absence, he returned to Cuba with camera in hand and captured over 100 intriguing and beautiful photographs of today's Cuba. He has framed a kaleidoscope of life, children, old people, farm workers, doctors, sugar cane and tobacco, working men, beautiful women and of course Castro. The writing by Tom Miller lacks the inspiration and connection to Cuba of Kufeld's photos, but then who buys a coffee table book for the writing? Recommended.
