Cuba,
By Cuba Traveler (Oakland, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuba (Paperback)
I thought this book was great. I read it before my latest trip to Cuba, and took it along with me to refer to. No, it is not a "stay at this hotel" or a "get a cheap meal at . . . " kind of travel book. Instead, it gives a thorough history, a cultural orientation, and a good overview of the diverse parts of the island. In addition, it contains poetry (18 verses from Jose Marti's original "Guantanamera" poem), book excerpts (from "Mob Lawyer" to "Diaries of Christopher Columbus" to "Old Man and the Sea") and articles(on santeria, cigars, and Guantanamo naval base). My Cuban tour guide loved the book and begged me to leave my copy with him (I did), which is a testimonial in itself. If you want to go to Cuba and have a good basis of knowledge about the island before you go, I recommend this book.

This review is from: Cuba (Cuba: Pearl of the Caribbean) (Paperback)
As a Cuban I must say that if anyone reads it before their first visit to the island they will be misimformed. But if it is read as a guide while in Cuba the visitor would be misguided, not knowing how much a meal costs or a hotel, etc. Totally useless. I recommend Lonely Planet's Travel Survival Kit - CUBA.
