Editorial Reviews

Review

A scholarly tour de force . . . Analysis and description are beautifully woven together into a rich, balanced, and nuanced presentation.
(Political Science Quarterly)

A masterful overview . . . Clearly written, economical, and focused on what is really important, this book is an excellent introduction.
(Journal of Southern History)

An extremely well written and intelligently crafted work.
(Choice)

A very useful addition to the existing literature . . . Close historical ties have resulted in voluminous literature on U.S.-Cuban relations. However, this literature is unbalanced in that it focuses on several periods when these relations were most intense (1895-1902 and 1959-present). Perez's volume is notable by comparison for its broad historical coverage and illumination of long-term systematic patterns of interaction between the two countries.
(Perspectives on Political Science)

Format: Paperback
This is an authoritative and eye-opening glimpse into pre-Revolutionary Cuba. As an American I was struck again and again by my profound ignorance on the history of anything Cuban, pre-Castro. I highly recommend this book for anybody looking for a deep and thorough historical recounting of the deep and tangled history of the U.S. in Cuba or simply to learn something new.

This was an excellent discourse on relations between the US and Cuba especially since the Spanish American war. It was also relevant to Latin American Studies in general.

Although this is a useful book, it's gotten to be out of date because of recent events.
