About the Artist

CELIA CRUZ Celia Cruz had a brilliant and successful music career in her native Cuba, where her extraordinary vocal talent and enormous popularity earned her the nickname "The Guarechera of Cuba." Her transcendence, however, masked an even greater ambition upon her arrival to the United States. Beginning a new phase of her career, joining the Fania Family, and linking her name to the great artists of the label, she made her mark and earned herself a new title: "The Queen of Salsa." She was also known as the "Gran Señora" for her integrity, human condition, and solid morals. Her success took the form of 80 recordings that prove her magnetism, as well as her ability to communicate through music: a rhythm and sound that made its way to many generations who have given her their applause and gratitude during sold-out concerts in five continents. These would give her music a wide audience. Celia was not only known for her vocal prowess, but for her dramatic talents as well. She appeared in nine movies, including "Los reyes del mambo." She also appeared in the soap operas "Valentina" and "El alma no tiene color," both of which were filmed in Mexico. Celia left behind a rich musical legacy, and will always reign as "La Guarachera de Cuba," the "Gran Señora," and the undisputed "Queen of Salsa."

TITO PUENTE

The excellence embodied by this unparalleled artist whose talents ran the gamut from musician, composer, director, and arranger paints a perfect picture of the dimension and magnitude of his talent. Tito Puente was known around the world as "The Timbal King," but he was also skilled at the bateria, congas, claves, piano, saxophone, and clarinet, which allowed him to create a school for every musical genre he entered. Attempting to tell his story requires going back to the very beginning of every musical movement he participated in over the course of his long and successful career. He was a great among greats. He gained his experience among the consecrated artists who would write the history of contemporary music. It would be impossible to name all the stars that Puente shared his music with or the countless performances he gave as "His Excellency, the World Ambassador of Latin American Music." Puente received the highest awards, distinctions, and praise for his more than 100 albums, 400 compositions, and countless arrangements for diverse artists and musical genres. Among those was the coveted Grammy, which he won five times. With the death of Maestro Tito Puente on May 31, 2000, an important chapter in the history of Latin American music closed forever. At the same time, he became a legend.

TITO PUENTE

4.0 out of 5 stars Tito and Celia's 1st album together!, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Cuba Y Puerto Rico Son (Audio CD)
Just listen to the first track! Puente's band is like a dynamo. His big band seemed to be augmented with extra percussionists for this hot date. Celia is in top form here and she handles the different styles and rhythms thrown at her very well.
Although very different from her later sessions with Johnny Pacheco in the 70's, these sessions are essential listening for fans of Celia and Puente's big band sound.
Very well recorded. This reissue has great liner notes and good remastered sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celia Cruz and Tito Puente at their best, June 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is by far my favorite Celia Cruz/Tito Puente collaboration. I still have a special place in my heart for their Tribute to Beny More, but this album just crackles with energy. Some would say that Celia's voice only aged like fine wine, but I don't think she ever sounded better than she did in this period and Tito Puente, moreso than anyone she ever worked with other than Ray Barretto, always brought out the best in her. Fania's new remastering is top notch and the sound has not dated one bit -- I can only hope they see fit to put out a few of their now unavailable collaborations (like In Spain).
