Grade 8 Up. A well-written, in-depth examination of one of the most frightening confrontations of the cold war. Almost half of the book is devoted to background information, including material about the Cuban Revolution, the deterioration in relations between the U.S. and Cuba as Castro moved closer to the Soviets, and our government's attempts to overthrow him, particularly the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion. Gow then relates the details of the crisis, emphasizing Kennedy's thoughtful and measured actions that allowed Khrushchev time to defuse the situation, remove the missiles, and avert a nuclear conflagration. She concludes with a short analysis of the situation and its aftermath. This is an objective account that discusses the roles played by all of the involved parties, including Castro, whose actions are often overlooked in the drama. Many quotes and excerpts from speeches, letters, and books are included. Black-and-white photos and maps are average in both selection and quality. Norman Finkelstein's Thirteen Days/Ninety Miles (Messner, 1994) offers more detail and primary-source material about the specifics of the incident and the way the two leaders handled it, but it lacks Gow's extensive background that will help young people understand why this situation occurred.
