This review is from: Cuban Originals (Audio CD)
This is a compilation of historical and rare recordings for the RCA label made in Cuba, The U.S. and Mexico by great, late cuban afro-singer Miguelito Valdes. Three of these great recordings are songs he recorded with the great cuban charanga "Orquesta America de Ninon Mondejar" in 1957's Mexico. Although there is no doubt that these recordings are of great historical value, the sound and re-editing quality of this CD are not of a good quality, background noises are heard throughout the recordings, especially on the cuban mega-hit, "El Platanal de Bartolo". The recording engineers, whomever these might have been, knew better and did a very poor re-editing job and simply did not do justice nor worked hard on the re-editing of these valuable recordings into digital sound and disc, were they paying attention at all during the re-editing? I hardly think so. I have given this recording, now discontinued by whomever purchased RCA, only 4 stars instead of 5 and I feel I am being generous, in spite of the poor sound re-editing. Aside from that and overlooking this problem, I regard these rare recordings are priceless. The very first version of Margarita Lecuona's "Babalu", recorded in the Habana of 1937 by Miguelito Valdes with Orquesta "Casino de la Playa" alone, "is worth the ticket". Let's hope someday, someone who's in a position to do so, re-edits this great album and improves its sound to the sound standards it should have.
