Incredible Rise To Power, May 12, 2000
This review is from: The Cuban cop (Hardcover)
This book inspired me. I feel I have made a connection with the author as a Cuban and a Law Enforcement Agent. It's not easy working the streets, and having such an intimate attachment to the community can agravate matters relating to enforcement. This author brought to light all the fears, anger, and frustration that comes with being Cuban and on top of your game. I really loved this book. I ate it the moment it arrived and I'm on my second reading. If your a Cop I highly recommend this book. If your Cuban, go out buy it now. But, if your a Cuban Cop, This is mandatory reading.

Better Writing Would Have Made a Better Book, May 29, 2000
This review is from: The Cuban cop (Hardcover)
In the Cuban Cop, Nick Navarro relives the stories that amounted to his incredibly fast rise to the top of his field. Some of the stories were downright amazing, but the writing just couldn't live up to them. Navarro had an unbelievable career in law enforcement, one that he describes in great detail. However, he jumps around too much as there isn't really a cohesive flow to the book. Sometimes, I had a hard time figuring out why he would be talking about a particular story during certain sections in the book. It was obvious in several areas that certain stories just didn't belong. The book became very dry at certain points, making it hard to stay interested. Several times, humor was used at the wrong time, yet, there were certain times where humor definately needed to be inserted just to help with the overall flow. The Cuban Cop has some fascinating stories, but they just aren't tied together well enough to make this book a good read. Perhaps, a more cogent writing style would have improved it.

The Most Corrupt County in the U.S. - Broward County, October 20, 2005
This review is from: The Cuban cop (Hardcover)
Broward County is the most corrupt Sheriff's office in the United States. Read this book to learn how Sheriff Nick Navarro actually manufactured crack cocaine the Broward Jails. There are now 5 mega-complex jails in Broward with approximately 6,000 inmates. There are countless lawsuits against the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO). There are numerous deputies that have been fired for filing false charges who are now charged with felonies. Some of those deputies are testifying against other BSO employees; 57 of which are currently under investigation by Internal Affairs. The FBI is said to be investigating current Sheriff Ken Jenne, for embezzling funds, for his blatent conflict of interest by owning a security firm that works for the Seminole Tribe, and for forcing subordinates to file false charges against innocent individuals. The BSO's mondus oprandi is arresting anyone for anything and keeping them in jail for as long as possible.
Sheriff Nick Navarro is credited with creating the television show COPS. He also is legendary for arresting record store owners for selling 2 Live Crew CDs. 2 Live Crew's Luke Skywalker sued Nick Navarro. The United States Supreme Court eventually decided that Nick Navarro's actions were unconstitutional and 2 Live Crew's music was not obscene.
Finally, Nick Navarro is most known for manufacturing crack cocaine in the Broward County Jails. Due to the crack cocaine shortage in Florida, Navarro ordered Broward County's chemist Randy Hilliard to manufacture thousands of crack cocaine rocks, some of which were lost. Those that weren't 'lost' were used to set up / entrap drug addicts and/or common criminals.
