2.0 out of 5 stars What's essential here?, May 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cubase Essential 5 Educational Edition (Electronics)
I was happy with Cubes 4 LE, and thought that by upgrading to 5 Essentials I would gain a lot more useable instruments, and
continue on my merry way with the stable environment of it's predecessor. Sadly that is not the case.
The Halion synthesizer that I had grown accustom to now has a nasty habit of sticking keys on one of the organ instruments that can only be released by reseting the midi keyboard. Sometimes the screen does not respond to the cursor for example when trying to set left and right indicators. That means fishing about, and losing time. Worst of all I still can't get an audio track to recognize my simple usb microphone which was never a problem in 4 LE nor in a small shareware program called REAPER which I have used in the past. I have gone to MySteinberg with these issues and searched the knowledge base to no avail. I should have been suspicious when I couldn't find any reviews here about this software. Something I usually try to do before purchasing. Maybe that is because no one buys this product. Perhaps Steinberg is just cutting their losses by keeping it on the market.
I will just continue to use 4 LE for now until something better comes along, but will probably NOT purchase from Steinberg again.

1.0 out of 5 stars never liked it, never will, July 1, 2011
This review is from: Cubase Essential 5 Educational Edition (Electronics)
I have always deeply disliked this software program. I have used it for years and still drives me mad: I have tried to patiently get into the program and it's useless manual and instructions, only to end up angry and frustrated at the inability to understand quickly how to do the most basic things, i.e. punch in-out, adding markers, etc ( I am trying to add markers right now, for some reason I now can't name them, so I end up with a list of rubbish markers named '0050.00.34.18'. It's so bad it makes me ill. What the guys at Steinberg fail to understand is that no one needs all this zillions of things, most of them you will never use, and you will only clutter and complicate your life, since the manual can't be studied randomly. If you just type 'markers' in the search option of the rubbish manual, you'll find that Mr. Big Brains at Steinberg makes it REALLY hard on you, as you have 3 or 4 different ways to do the same thing and you have to waste time and energies sussing out what you DON'T want to do, and then after 30 minutes you'll find you still DID NOT get to do what you wanted to do in the first place: adding markers that make sense, with 'verse' or 'chorus' in the names, not a string of stupid numbers.

Don't spend your hard earned cash on this absurd rubbish... hundreds of dollars....only to have stress and frustration? are you kidding? you can get a similar program for much less, i.e. Mixcraft. Don't get brainwashed by the belief that Cubase and Logic are the best, or that spending that much money makes you feel more professional as a musician, it's nonsense. What you want is a program that at least doesn't put obstacles between you and the process of MAKING music, and Cubase doesn't fall into this category, it will only frustrate you. Trust me, I have been a musician and multi-instrumentalist for 20 years, and I have always made and recorded more music with my Roland and Yamaha workstations than with this Cubase trash.
