Robots throughout the town have gone haywire. Usually helpful and obedient, they're now bent on destruction. It's up to Connor, Abbey, and the rest of the Cubix gang to round up the robots before Dr. K and his robot Kolossal.
In the Story Mode, you will come face-to-face with huge robots in strategic turn-based battles. Between battles you will be faced with minor puzzle-solving. As Connor, you will jump, push blocks, and search all over Bubble Town to find important items like batteries, diagnostics, and Emotion Processing Units (EPUs) that grant your robots new abilities.
Battle System
Before entering a battle you must first choose a robot. The five types -- Power, Fire, Water, Electric and Radiation -- have different strengths and weaknesses, so your choice can decide the outcome of a battle.
Next, you must choose a type of attack -- Aggressive, Standard or Defense. Aggressive attacks deal the most damage but also leave you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Defense attacks will reduce the amount of damage you receive, but only inflict minor damage. Standard stakes a middle ground between the two extremes.
Showdown gives an action twist to familiar turn-based combat. Before you can execute an attack, a circular dial will start spinning in the center of the screen. With a carefully timed press of a button, you must stop the dial. If the dial lands in a blue section the attack is successful, but if it lands in the red you will miss completely and waste a valuable turn.
Fun battling is central to Cubix Robots for Everyone: Showdown. You gain special powers by collecting Emotion Processing Unit chips and can assimilate as many as 25 defeated robots into your team.
Multiplayer
In Vs. Mode, two players can compete in a robot battle. 3DO has also thrown in 16 minigames that up to four players can compete in. One minigame challenges you to complete a slide puzzle before your opponents do; others are simple matching games. Most of the games must be unlocked before they can be played, and with such a long list of games you will be busy for a while.
Graphics
The colorful graphics in Cubix Robots for Everyone: Showdown mimic the animated series nicely. The robots look massive and the anime-inspired battles are exciting to watch. Human characters look slightly less impressive and the forced perspective can make exploring more difficult than it should be.
Cubix Robots for Everyone: Showdown is a good mix of action and strategy that will please fans of the series. Even kids who aren't familiar with the characters may enjoy the giant robot battles. The minigames are quite basic, but may be a nice way to have fun on your next sleep-over.
