Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

For the past 60 years, the Chicago Cubs and WGN-TV have combined to bring a long-running, real-life serial program of joy, frustration, and passion--first to Chicago, then to a national cable audience. The WGN/Cubs relationship is unparalleled in the sports world, and the Cubs have been transformed into America's Team with loyal fans spread across the country. Cubs Forever celebrates the 60-year romance between the team, the superstation, and the fans. It brings to life some of the great games and moments in the team's history, such as Ernie Banks's 500th home run, the first night game at Wrigley Field, the 23-22 slugfest, and four no-hitters. Add in stories from the men who work behind the scenes at Wrigley Field and WGN, plus interviews with the team's many stars over this six-decade period, and you have a baseball bonanza for fans of all ages.

Cubs legends such as Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Ryne Sandberg; broadcasters Harry Caray, Jack Brickhouse, and Steve Stone; plus Cub fans from Bonnie Hunt to Jimmy Buffett to Bill Murray, commiserate on the ups and downs of being a Cubs fan.

Cubs photographer Stephen Green brings each page to life with a colorful selection of photographs from signature moments in Cubs history along with stunning new portraits of Cubs legends. In addition, Cubs Forever comes with a special DVD containing interviews with key Cubs players and broadcasters. Their unique insights, stories, and humor add a dimension that cannot be covered in the book alone.

Everybody who is now or has ever been a Chicago Cub's fan needs to own this book, which comes with a great video of exciting moments in Cub's history. The stories and photos are priceless. A special tribute to WGN Chicago for their T.V. coverage of Cub's Baseball for the last 60 years.

My husband and I saw the special on WGN so I got him the book for Fathers' Day. He loved it and keeps it by his chair. Great present but watch the video also, it brought tears to my eyes. Is this finally our year?

Anyone who grew-up watching the Cubs on a little B&W portable TV along with a few games a year out at the friendly confines, will immediately be transported into their youth. The book includes a nice DVD video with some great interviews, none of them lengthy, that give the book some real added punch. Goes past just the players on the field, to describe in detail the WGN team that made televised baseball a true art-form. Arnie Harris, the WGN producer and mastermind behind it all, stands out as the greatest producer in sports history once you've read the book.

An especially timely book now that WGN and the Cubs are heading their separate ways. In many ways that suggests the beginning of the end for the Cubs as many of us knew them. Going forward, my expectation is that the Cubs will move to a new stadium in Rosemont within 15 years, followed by leaving Chicago altogether soon after that. But for now, there's still a chance to relive what was the greatest sports team-up any kid could have ever asked for, WGN and the Chicago Cubs.
