I dont know anything about Yerba Buena.. I happened to run into this cd at a thrift store and since I love latin music i thought i'd give it a chance.. boy am i glad.. this cd is just a wonderful blend of modern production and traditional cuban/latin music... first of all cucu's voice- well she sounds like a woman that has experienced something (she inhabits the songs as billie holiday would..this isn't some young pop singer..this is a wo-man)- does the songs well... second the songs whether about sad subject or happy are all upbeat which is a huge plus for me... and the production (brass/accordions/etc) is modern and first rate.. i also have to say something about the initial intro to the record which -unknowingly or not- reminds me of babs on the art blakey and the jazz messengers lps of the 1950s... the songs are just so darn catchy is the thing you'll find yourself moving your head to it..the use of english in the lyrics is also fairly clever "sigo estando crazy...sigo estando free...".. this is one of those albums that seems to have gotten lost in the mix but i hope it can still find an audience because it deserves it.. Just to add: I listen to a ton of latin music from fania salsa dura/hard to argentine rock to los amigos invisibles to manu chao and this is grade a modern latin music.. just wish i'd caught the cucu diamantes show here in dc to promote this record..at the time i just was not aware of this..

Good follow-up to Yerba Buena,

This CD sounds similar in scope to her previous work with Yerba Buena and with Descemer's album as well. There are strong elements that come from Cuban music, but this is not Timba, salsa, or son. It's more like a fusion of tropical elements with some reggeaton, hip-hop, pop, and some electronic sounds as well. The rhythms are unique and original, if sometimes they sound a bit weird. And this is all similar to Yerba Buena, her previous band. The lyrics are mosly pop like about love and relationships, through with a certain sense of humor which I would compare to Lady Gaga in Spanish. Also like Yerba Buena the lyrics have a bit of English thrown in, through they are mostly in Spanish. If you liked Yerba Buena and Descemer, like me, you will like this offering as well. On the other hand if you don't like genre blending and unique sounds that are not necesarily what is #1 right now you will hate it.

I heard an interview w/ Cucu Diamantes, in which some of her music was played, and I fell for it directly. Great music! I was however, disappointed that I could only buy it as MP3's. Though conveniently quick & cheaper than a CD, you have to do the saving yourself and do not get a nice CD w/ cover. I can do a lot of that myself, but occasionally I like the real thing! I would have loved to have a choice, buy some or all MP3's first and then the CD. Who knows, it may still happen!

Amazingly bad,

There are no words to describe how awful this CD is, and how could this lady ever be allowed into a recording studio to do this trash. Her voice is terrible, she has no musicality AT ALL, her approach is not funny or sexy but utterly vulgar. What else can I say? Much more, but I'll stop here. I have listened to old Yerbabuena records and they were more than acceptable, but the inclusion of this perfomer (let's call her something) does a huge disfavor to the group. Buy it just if you want to experience and astonishingly dreadful experience... It's like pouring Drano into your ear.
