bilingual teacher's saving grace,
By Suzanne (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuentos de la selva (Hardcover)
What can a bilingual teacher do when s/he notices that students look bored during read aloud? If they are in grades 2 or above, whip out Cuentos de la selva, a collection of stories about animals in the jungles of South America. Start with "El loro pelado". That will captivate them completely. After that, they will enjoy all other stories. Any student with a 5th grade reading level can read and enjoy the stories independently. I would like to thank Amazon.com for finding this book for me. I tried several other publishers, and they were unable to find me this gem.

The short stories by Horacio Quiroga have had a deep impact on me as I was a kid. The stories are engaging, sharp and crude. It is always a joy to re read them.
BEWARE: This edition is NOT the original one titled "Cuentos de la Selva", which has 8 great magical stories that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The original one has the following stories: LA TORTUGA GIGANTE, LAS MEDIAS DE LOS FLAMENCOS, EL LORO PELADO, LA GUERRA DE LOS YACARES, LA GAMA CIEGA, HISTORIA DE DOS CACHORROS DE COATÍ Y DOS CACHORROS DE HOMBRE, EL PASO DE YABEBIRÍ and LA ABEJA HARAGANA. The edition that is sold here in Amazon edited by Diferencias has only 3 of these stories, and then some of stories from CUENTOS DE AMOR, LOCURA Y MUERTE, also a great collection of short stories however not very appropriate for young children. Also you may want to search on the internet (portalcoquimbo.cl) and download the text as it has fallen into the public domain already.

There is a wisdom to these stories, they convey humor and
delicate insight, they are captivating. The Blind Doe, the Lazy Bee, The Flamencos with Hosiery, The Bald Parrot, and so on. They could be on any Essential Literature list. Classic, enduring, charming. Nature is anthropomorphized but not made sacharin.

I speak Spanish fairly fluently as a second language, but trying to read in Spanish can be so tiresome sometimes. This collection of short stories is easy reading yet interesting enough to keep me turning the page. Makes it much easier to find motivation to read in Spanish, something I need to do to keep from getting rusty!
