A pasta insert does a job similar to that of a colander, but can be much more convenient when cooking for a large crowd. Fill the stockpot with just slightly less water than usual, and drop in the insert. When the water's boiling, add pasta or veggies and boil regularly. Just as al dente is achieved, pull the entire insert from the pot, pasta and all. The water drains out easily, with no need to lug a full and heavy stockpot over to the sink for draining. Depending on the food, you can often reuse the water--a nice environmental bonus. (Some say that water used for cooking vegetables makes great plant fertilizer.) It's dishwasher-safe, but you may find it a bit large for many standard washers, so keep a scrubber handy. The outside can get a bit starchy after a full load of pot stickers. --Jill Lightner

This so called pasta insert is a full 3 inches shallower that the 9 qt. Cuisinart pot! Cooking long pasta is a joke ( too shallow ) and ANYTHING cooked with this combo requires much more energy because the food is so far from the bottom of the pot. Worse still, the volume of food cooked in it is reduced greatly, rendering the insert useless for volume cooking. A WASTE OF MONEY. MY true rating is ZERO STARS!!!

The insert stinks. It does not utilize the full contents of the 9 qt. stock pot and does not cook all pasta properly because not all types of pasta fit into the pot.

I bought the pasta insert to go with the stockpot and its been great. It fits snugly in the pot and makes removing the pasta a breeze. No worries about spilling hot water while trying to pour into a colandar. It cleans up real well -- a quick wash removes starch and returns the shiny finish. Also, the handle attaches with a smooth weld which is much easier to clean than the rivets on my last insert.
