The first time used it to toast a slice of bread, I set the dial at 2-3.

I bought this Cuisinart toaster about a month ago. Previously, I owned a cheap Toastmaster two slice toaster that I had since college.
This toaster is compact but has everything you could need. It has slots wide enough for homemade bread and bagels, a reheat and defrost button and a cancel button. It is a very powerful toaster for sandwich bread. The first time I used it I was too excited to read the instructions first so I set the LED dial at 5 which was the level I used on my Toastmaster. That was a mistake because I burnt the toast crisp. This toaster I only have to set to a 2 to get my toast a nice brown shade. It really puts off the heat. I don't eat bagels so I can't say how it does on them. On Toaster Strudels it works well at a level 4 or 5 setting.
I love this toaster and would buy it again!

This appliance has several good features, but they are outweighted by the fact that it does not produce a decent piece of toast. At the lowest setting one side of the toast comes out too brown, the other side barely toasted. The inner side of the bread toasts faster than the outer side. We did manage to get a decent piece of toast by inserting the bread, setting a timer for 1 minute, pressing cancel, reversing the bread, and slowly counting to thirty before pressing cancel again. Far too much work!

Have been using the new toaster for about a month. Pros: Nice clean look. Cons: 3 major complaints. 1) It runs way too hot. We initially set it on #4/5, thinking that was middle of the road doneness. Unfortunately my toast looked like it had been cooked in molten lava. We are now using #2 and it seems OK, but I can't get the toaster waffles to come out right. (In case you are wondering, Yes, I read the manuals that come with appliances). 2) Slots not long enough. I am not buying "Special" bread, just stuff off the racks at the local supermarket and it doesn't fit in the slots. The toaster will handle a "girthy" bagel, but not a wide piece of bread. Weak. 3) The dial is really lame. You think a high-tech LCD readout when buying the toaster, but its really just a lighted dial.

Bottom Line: The toaster works, but I would not buy it again, nor recommend it to others.

They put Cuisinart on it and sell it. Don't buy it, though.
The preset buttons, Bagel, Defrost, etc., have NEVER worked on mine.
The number settings get random results, either warmed or burnt.
The number LED always glows, so you have to train yourself to stop panicking reflexively, "Oh my god, the toaster's on!" every time you walk past.
And today, after 4 months, the lever won't stay down--toaster death.

I purchased this toaster in November of 2007 from Amazon. Yesterday, it broke. The product brochure told me that the toaster has a 3 year warranty. I called Cuisinart. They told me that they would replace the toaster but that I would have to pay shipping to receive the replacement and to return the defective unit to them, The shipping would cost more than the toaster. What a waste! I used to think that Cuisinart stood for quality. No more.

After one month of use I have no complaints about this toaster. It toasts our thicker homemade bread very well but I have to remember to turn the dial down if using store bought bread. My husband uses it for his bagels and I haven't heard any grumbles. It is east to clean and takes up very little space on the counter top. I bought this toaster because it was a good value even though it had a couple of poor reviews that it didn't really toast but just warmed the bread. I haven't had that problem. Haven't tried the defrost settings and may never use them. I'm happy as long as it continues to work and last a long time.

This toaster worked great for a month. Then the lever stopped working properly and half the time we can't get the slots to stay down at all. I do not recommend this toaster. The warranty from Cuisinart is useless - we would have to spend our own money to ship it to them and then include $7 for them to ship a replacement or repaired toaster back.

( I bought from Macy's, not Amazon.)

This is an amazingly bad product from a company that I mistakenly thought was a quality leader.

Bread comes out unevenly toasted on one side and nothing on the other side. Didn't anyone at Cuisinart notice this during product testing? To compensate, I turn the timer down, then when it pops I flip the bread and run it again. It' a small thing, but I'd rather not do it.

The buttons on the outside -- "Bagel", "Defrost", "Reheat" -- don't do anything I can discern. They should have a "Make toast that is evenly browned on both sides in one cycle" button. That would be useful.

(There's also a silly "Cancel" button which just pops the toast. I'm trying to imagine the design meeting where someone said "How will people be able to stop the toaster in an emergency?" and someone else said, "I've got it! We'll add a Cancel button, just like they have in Windows.")

My guess is any other toaster on the market at any price would be a better choice.
