4.0 out of 5 stars Grinds well
I bought this as a replacement to fix the issue that most are experiencing of the grinder being nearly impossible to remove after coffee brews. It did not fix the issue. The problem seems to be with the coffee pot gear that the grinder slips over. I have temporary resolved the issue by putting grease on the gear so it would slip on and off easier (still hard to pull...

1.0 out of 5 stars Grinder stuck in the coffee maker!, June 19, 2009
This review is from: Cuisinart DGB-500GRD Grinder (Kitchen)
After 3 years of using the original grinder on our Cuisinart Automatic Grind & Brew, the blades became dull so we replaced it with this grinder part. It worked okay for a year of gentle use (brewing about once a week, cleaning after each use), then the connection between the grinder's spinning blades unit and the shaft in the main coffee machine gradually became too tight. Before each use the grinder would go smoothly mounted on the machine, but after brewing the entire grinder part gets stuck there (perhaps because of the heat, moisture, or the combination of both?) and wouldn't come out! I have to struggle with it for at least 10 minutes just to get the grinder out of the coffee machine so I can clean it for the next use. The problem got so worse, now I have to pull out my tool box and use pliers and wrenches to take it out! Once the grinder is mounted, there is very little space around it so it is extremely difficult to get your fingers in and around the grinder and pull it out. My wife struggled so hard to force it out and ended up with nasty bruises on her fingers! We never had this problem with the original grinder part. It is so ridiculous that the entire "Grind & Brew" machine is now worthless because of the problem with this small part.

I bought this as a replacement to fix the issue that most are experiencing of the grinder being nearly impossible to remove after coffee brews. It did not fix the issue. The problem seems to be with the coffee pot gear that the grinder slips over. I have temporary resolved the issue by putting grease on the gear so it would slip on and off easier (still hard to pull off but don't need a pry bar now).

Try lubricating the gears before purchasing this part. Odds are you can get it to work without the added expense of this part.

I think this issue is caused by the gear being fibrous and eventually absorbing the steam/water vapors during brewing and such.

I would not purchase this item again until actually needed since it did not resolve the issue. Please note that there is nothing wrong with the new part and it came in good shipping time and the company was fine to deal with. It just isn't the issue on my unit.

I will most likely use the pot till I can no longer remove this part for cleaning and then trash the whole unit for something a bit better, if that exists.

Update: did not need this part. To resolve the issue of the grinder sticking in the bay, clean the bay and drive shaft DAILY. Good to have a spare part but really didn't need it. Very happy with the brewer and grinder now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good grinder, January 16, 2012

We've used our grinder for 4 1/2 years and the beans started eating away at the plastic and made it crack. This replacement was a perfect fit, and grinds just as well as the other. I have no doubt that the replacement will last us another four years.

We had the same issue with our old grinder sticking in the Cuisinart machine like everyone else, however, we had an easy fix. When it started to get stuck, we just lubbed it up with cooking oil, let is soak in overnight, and it stopped sticking. We lube it up about once a year. We've had no other problems with the grinder. It grinds wonderfully! We've been using the replacement grinder for about a month and so far it is not sticking.

I can't live without my Cuisinart Thermal Grind & Brew, so when the grinder mechanism froze in the housing, I was happy to be able to buy this part. However, the bottom winds up with coffee in it (this also happened with the original grinder mechanism, but eventually stopped). And, just as with this coffee maker in general, cleaning is not quick and easy. I would have rated this 3 stars for inconvenience, except that it does a good job grinding and that's the bottom line for me.

This Cuisinart grinder is perfect. It works better than the one that came with the coffee pot. Cleans easier as well

The reason I ordered this part was because the original part has lost a washer and it very hard to remove it to clean after use. The new part has the same problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ten dollars for nothing, April 27, 2009

This review is from: Cuisinart DGB-500GRD Grinder (Kitchen)
The grinder part, while the correct product number, did not fit the coffeemaker. We had to have a previous replacement a year and a half or so ago, same item #, ordered directly from Cuisinart that did fit, but which only lsated a year and half! We returned the grinder, and were given a credit for the purchase price, but were out the original postage and handling - about $7.00 - plus the $3.00 it cost to mail the part back. If this were my first experience with ordering on the Internet, I would never do it again. As it is, we won't use this vendor again.
