Well, I suppose it could have been worse if the thing had burned down the house, but I would still classify this machine as pure evil. It is especially evil because it bears the Cuisinart brand name, leading one to believe it is a quality machine. For the price, it certainly should be.

I am not inept, generally speaking, but this "Easy-Pop" popcorn maker is far more trouble than it is worth. It is difficult to line up the heating element prongs when you put it together. This would have been an easy design element to fix, just by having slots with wide openings that taper down as the element slides in, properly aligning it. Nope. You have to line it up just right, and the marks on the back--NOT THE FRONT WHERE YOU COULD SEE THEM--are difficult to see and line up.

So, I add the popcorn and oil and turn it on. Fifteen minutes later, it's still spinning, but I don't have any popcorn. I turn it off, readjust the handles and make sure it is latched, and turn it on again. Ten minutes later, no popcorn, and I've lost all interest by now. Still, I try a third time to see if it will even work. It finally pops the popcorn. When it is done popping, I turn it over, but because the bowl does not attach tightly to the base, I allow a gap to open and popcorn goes everywhere. While trying to get it rightd and back together, I slip and burn my finger on the very hot element. Who thought it was a good idea to have people flipping over a burning-hot burner with just two tiny handles to hold onto?

I just threw all that popcorn away, I was so frustrated. After the first disaster, I'm sure I could use it better the next time, if it will heat up. Why would they call this an "Easy-Pop" popcorn maker? That should be illegal.

We got this machine for Christmas and have used it several times since. We are big popcorn eaters and usually just went the microwave popcorn route.

While we can't get the same buttery goodness out of popcorn that comes from this machine, you do get to put whatever you want on the popcorn it produces (we like some sharp cheddar and a little butter).

All in all, its a good machine. Probably would have preferred the black one, but that's just preference.

*** UPDATE (6/8/2010): As others have said, the machine does seem to just stop working. I have dropped my review to 3 stars thanks to a defective popper.

I love this machine. It is easy to use and clean and the best part is tasty healthy popcorn.
The design is simple, although I found it is best to NOT machine wash the heating plate. The release mechanism has broken (Cuisinart replaced) from the hot water. The plate still works fine, it just latches on one side only. Having a machine dedicated to popcorn is a must and this one is nice to see the popcorn as it pops. It does not fly out all over the floor like hot air poppers, or require heavy lifting like an iron skillet. I have used different brands of popcorn with consistent results.

I have owned this for 3 years and love it. Just bought two for wedding gifts. Be careful with the plastic piece that releases it from the unit. Mine broke, I called Cuisinart and even though it was out of warranty they replaced that part for me. Very Happy customer.

The design is simple and uncomplicated leading to it's ease of use and ease in clean-up. Surprisingly efficient at popping most kernels (we have only used the cheap grocery store brand). We really like the popcorn with nothing more than a little salt.
