I have had this ice cream maker for over a year. I LOVE IT. I have also had to replace the freezer bowl twice and the latest bowl (#3) is now unusable. In theory, the extra bowl is a wonderful idea. I give it 5 stars. In reality, when plastic is cold it is FRAGILE. The plastic that is the outer cover of this bowl is so fragile it will crack if you LOOK at it sideways...

5.0 out of 5 stars So many more uses!, December 19, 2000

While I do have the ice cream maker, I ordered an additional freezer bowl to have on hand. It is helpful if you want to make two flavors of ice cream, or if you want to cool the warm custard for vanilla ice cream before you freeze it.

I have also used this container to quickly cool items (like Jello which must be cooled for a mousse, raspberry mousse comes to mind :) in a metal bowl. Place any metal bowl on the top of this container. It will be stable and the bowl will get ice cold. The contents will then cool very quickly.

Try this bowl to cool down custard when you are filling pastries. Just pour in the custard and stir with a spatula for a few minutes. Soon, you have creamy, cold custard to fill those pastries.

I recommend keeping one of these in the freezer at all times. There are just so many more uses! Use it everytime you need to cool a liquid quickly. You will love the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy if you are going to make a lot of ice cream!, June 26, 2000

This review is from: Cuisinart ICE-RFB 1-1/2-Quart Additional Freezer Bowl, Fits ICE-20/21 Ice Cream Maker (Kitchen)
Cuisinart makes it easy for ice cream lovers by selling extra freezer bowls! Having an extra freezer bowl is extremely useful if you are making large quantities of ice cream or you plan on making different varieties. According to the instruction booklet it can take between six to twenty-two hours to freeze the bowl. We usually keep one bowl in the freezer all the time, then when making a batch of ice cream we replace it with the extra bowl. The freezer bowl doesn't take up much space and it's easy to clean! Fantastic Buy!

The plastic that is the outer cover of this bowl is so fragile it will crack if you LOOK at it sideways. All three bowls have cracked. (My machine came with a cracked bowl which was replaced by the merchant.) They were not cracked by extra-ordinary measures. One slid out of the freezer when the door was opened (it dropped about a foot), one bumped the side of the stainless steel sink when I was rinsing the outside off under the faucet and one slipped from my hand and dropped a couple of inches to the table top. When they are cracked, the liquid that between the layers runs out and turns into a crystalized mess. For what it has cost in bowls ... and the original machine, I could have THREE of the complete ice cream freezers. All the other reviews were right on, the machine is so much easier than the old ice and rock-salt machines BUT the construction material of THIS BOWL needs to be changed. Instead of plastic it should be metal (it looks like aluminum on the inside) inside and out... and paint, enamel or, better yet, plasti-coat the outside. For right now, my ice cream comes out of a box or from the ice cream store or dairy store. Sadly.

I verified directly with Cuisinart Customer Service (20 minute wait on hold) that this Cuisinart 1-1/2 Quart Additional Freezer Bowl fits not only the ICE-20, but also the Ice-21. I'll know for sure when it arrives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it's supposed to do, September 23, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cuisinart ICE-RFB 1-1/2-Quart Additional Freezer Bowl, Fits ICE-20/21 Ice Cream Maker (Kitchen)
There's not too much to be said for this item beyond the fact that it does what it's supposed to do. It freezes solid and stays frozen long enough to make ice cream. I'd offer a couple of caveats which in no way reflect on the item itself: First, be sure it is thoroughly frozen or your ice cream won't firm up properly. Give it a shake. If there is even a little mushiness to the liquid inside, you'll hear it. And if you do, put it back into the freezer for 12 more hours. Next, get the ice cream out of the bowl as soon as possible after freezing. It sticks to the side and has to be scraped out. This doesn't necessarily detract from the quality of the finished product but it's a pain.

What's the point? Well, an extra bowl will allow you to make more than one batch of ice cream a day. If your freezer is set low enough, and not too packed, you can probably rotate two bowls for fresh ice cream every day. And isn't that really why you got your ice cream maker? I really recommend getting the second bowl, to avoid frustration and ice cream-less days with long faces and frayed tempers.

It's not expensive. Knock yourself out.

If you already have the ice cream maker, this will allow you to make more in the same day. I will say that occasionally it will come as a free bonus when you buy the ice cream maker, so look out for a good deal like that before you rush into purchasing this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job when frozen properly, November 13, 2002
This review is from: Cuisinart ICE-RFB 1-1/2-Quart Additional Freezer Bowl, Fits ICE-20/21 Ice Cream Maker (Kitchen)
When frozen overnight, this bowl makes ice cream in about 30 minutes, and does it well. Then it cleans up very easily, and can go right back in the freezer for another round.

My main complaint with it is the faulty instructions. It does *not* take 6-22 hours to freeze properly, or until you shake it and can't hear liquid. I can't imagine any home freezer could get the bowl cold enough to make a batch of ice cream in less than 12 hours, if not more than that. I was very disappointed with my first attempt at ice cream making because of this instructional flaw.

However, now that I know how to properly use the bowl, I have had nothing but great ice cream to show for it! I've never broken one of my bowls, so I haven't had the cracking or leaking problems others have had (yet).

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice having an extra bowl, June 7, 2006

As long as you do not have a tiny freezer section on your fridge, you really should buy a 2nd bowl for your machine.

I usually make frozen yogurt for myself, and my husband is an ice cream fanatic - so I use 2 bowls regularly. Neither of us needs to be "left out" when I decide to make frozen desserts.

Highly recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra bowl a must have, September 21, 2006
This review is from: Cuisinart ICE-RFB 1-1/2-Quart Additional Freezer Bowl, Fits ICE-20/21 Ice Cream Maker (Kitchen)
I've had a great time with the ice cream maker I've got (actually, I've got two--different makes and three bowls). One does not make enough product for even a small family gathering, especially with the recipes I use. Like other reviewers I would like to have lids that would fit snuggly and keep the ice cream or ?? covered. I've had to make a circular lid out of thick cardboard covered with tinfoil, but something that would fit over the entire top of the bowl would be better.

I purchased the icecream maker which came with one bowl, but liked it so much I decided to get an extra bowl so that I would be able to make two batches easily when I had larger amounts of company. I have made many of the recipes that have come with the icecream maker, and they have all turned out delicious. I would recommend purchasing an extra bowl, just so that you have enough yummy icecream to go around.
