Great concept, good coffee,
This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I knew I wanted my next coffee maker to have a thermal carafe -- for energy efficiency, better taste, and no more worries about turning the machine off. This machine shines in all those ways, and I am surprised how liberated I feel not having to worry about having turned off the coffee maker (somehow this concern would always arise mid-commute). This machine turns off as soon as the brew cycle stops; the thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot so no heating plate is needed.
My only complaints, which are noted by other reviewers, concern the design of the carafe. It is difficult to completely empty. As a result, the carafe cannot be used to fill the water tank, as getting the last bit of water out will cause some spillage. I use a small pitcher instead. And yes, the carafe pours slowly. I assume that this, and the difficulty emptying, are by-products of a design that effectively keeps the heat in without needing to open of loosen the lid to pour. Although they produce a bit of a hassle, for me these problems don't negate the benefits of the thermal carafe. The coffee stays warm, even when the carafe is only partially filled, allowing me to drink it leisurely through the morning with consistent flavor from first cup to last (3 hours). The machine is a bit bigger than my old bare-bones coffee maker, but fits easily under the upper cabinets. I do have to slide it out to open the lid and use, but I did that with my smaller model as well. I would absolutely buy this again.

Wonderful coffee maker,
By Lori Topaz (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I purchased this coffeemaker after careful research and like it very much. It makes delicious coffee that stays hot for about 4 hours. The coffee retains good flavor for the whole time. It is also easy to clean. With a regular coffee pot (not thermal), the coffee loses its flavor after an hour. This one meets my needs. Also, Cuisinart warranties it for 3 years. I have owned a grind and brew coffee maker and prefer this one which I use in conjunction with my grinder.
It isn't perfect, but the small drawbacks don't bother me. Yes, it is a little hard at first to read the fill markings for water. To get the last bit of coffee out of the carafe, you do have to take off the lid and really tilt the carafe. On the other hand, that last bit tastes good. I also like the looks of this device. The stainless steel goes with many other appliances. Overall, it is a recommend. LT

I AM VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT COFFEE!!,

This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I am very particular about just about anything. But especially Coffee. I drink 4 - 6 / 12 - 16 oz's a day. I read almost every positive and negative review about this product. This coffee maker lives up to the positives. First, It looks great.
The only problem I had was figuring out how to set the clock. (you have to hold down the clock button until it blinks). Second, I did run water alone through it like the directions suggested to make sure it was clean and free of dust. There was no plastic smell at all. Third, I decided to try the permanent filter even though I had a fear it would leave grounds. It does not leave any grounds in the coffee!. The only disadvantage is cleaning the filter. When you dump it in the trash only about half the grounds come out and you have to rinse the rest of them out in the sink. Not a deal breaker just an FYI. Fourth, I put cream in my coffee. UPS delivered my coffee pot around 11 AM and my 11:30 I was having my first cup which was plenty hot. I made a full pot without using the 1-4 cup button. We then went out for the day and at 6:35 PM I decided to have a cup. Now I was assuming I would have to nuke it by then and was just curious how warm it would be. Now I can not stand luke warm or cold coffee, to me it is disgusting! at 6:35 with cream the coffee was still hot. Now I know I just got it today but seriously for the money I do not think you can find a better coffee maker. Oh as far as the beeps. They ARE NOT crazy loud. Whoever said that is crazy. Also as far as the small marker on the side of the pot to tell the water intake and the small opening to pour water. Ok yes it is a little small. But I have always used a plastic pitcher that I bought at a store for [...] bucks and I have no problems pouring it in. as far as the marker goes, I actually look at it from the inside as I pour and I have not had any problems. Lastly what I do love about it is that is does not leak at all when pouring. My old one leaked because I was trying to pour too fast. I do rinse the top of it to make sure the ball does not stick. Anyway so far so good. I would definitely recommend this product.

Just OK for lukewarm coffee,

This is my third cuisinart coffeemaker this year.
I had a grind n brew for many years - but it was such a mess to clean each use, I started buying ground coffee. It made excellent coffee, but I wanted a thermal carafe to keep the coffee hot. This coffeemaker lives in my garage until I can find it a good home. I bought a cuisinart all plastic black thermal carafe coffeemaker about 7-8 months ago - I bought it at Tuesday Morning for $49, so it must have been discontinued model or something. It made excellent coffee, and the carafe kept it very hot. But, after about 5 months, it leaked when brewing. Water ran down the inside back of the machine and formed a puddle on my counter each morning. Oh well - this machine has also moved to the garage, where it keeps the grind 'n brew company. I bought this white thermal coffeemaker about 3 weeks ago. All of my other appliances are white. The coffee it makes is ok. Perhaps I need to experiment further. I can pour the same amount of water in the reservoir yet get different amounts of coffee on separate brew cycles. It's a disappointing surprise to think you've brewed enough for 2 big mugs (6 cups)- have it work sometimes, but not have enough for the second mug on other occassions. I used the 1-4 cup setting to have coffee for my travel mug waiting in the morning - and that makes weaker coffee then the same amounts of coffee and water without pressing the 1-4 button. So I don't bother with the 1-4 cup setting. Lastly, this carafe is the worst I've had for keeping coffee hot. The black plastic carafe on the prior machine was much better, as are carafes I've purchased separately. An hour after brewing coffee, its only lukewarm. And why does a machine with a carafe also have a hotplate under the carafe? So, I'm not very pleased with this machine. It's getting the job done for the majority of days to set the timer and have coffee waiting for my travel mug as I leave for work. I'll use it for a while - perhaps I'll master the water level to brewed coffee equation and it will improve. 10/25 - 6-7 weeks later, thought I would write an update, while checking to see if others have same experience. The coffee it makes is more consistent. The carafe is terrible - it doesn't keep the coffee warm at all. I am not a fan of scalding hot coffee, but an hour after brewing, I need to microwave a cup. Plus, the design of the carafe makes for very awkward pouring. Its supposed to be some self-sealing pouring spout, but it means only a tiny trickle comes out when the coffee level is relatively low. I have to tip the carafe more than 90 degrees to get it to pour, and then sometimes coffee leaks out the brew opening.

This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I've been using this for 4 months now and I dispute all these reviewers who's review is laughable. Yes, the machine beeps 4 times when ready to alert you. But wake up the whole house???? Who are these people and do they sleep in the kitchen?
Next, are the whiners about lukewarm coffee. If you want hotter coffee just press the 1-4 cups button - it double heats the water for more extraction. Guarantee if you drink it black it'll burn you. Next, is the carafe criers. In 4 months I havent had this drip once. Its quite impressive in that I CANT get it to drip no matter how slow or fast I pour it. It takes me 5 seconds to pour the cold water in the spot in the back. And the carafe has a long lip so it goes right into this spot - its foolproof really. The water level on the side is highly visible and much preferred over pots with markings on the inside. Finally, it makes a consistently good cup of java pretty quickly and the stainless steel carafe will never break - unlike the glass ones. It looks great on the counter. And even though the inside is plastic you do not get that plastic taste in your coffee like other brands that overheat the water - I like that for safety. With a thermal carafe you can put it on the table to serve guests at your card game or whatever and it keeps it hot - try doing that with glass pot. Go ahead and buy this with confidence and enjoy a great cup of coffee!

Nice replacement for my old unit,
By AKO California (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I'd read some of the negative reviews but took the chance anyway and bought one. After over a month of use, I'm very happy with this coffee maker.
There is a "1-4" button that makes the water hotter if just 1 through 4 cups of coffee are being brewed. I think hitting that button first would help some of the lukewarm problems some people are having. My coffee comes out hot. Although some do appear to have defective units. Other pluses: - Carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours without the hot plate being heated. Saves electricity. - No worrying about forgetting to turn it off. It brews and then is off. (I had to call a neighbor to turn off my old coffee maker after I'd flown out of town on a trip.) - Included gold filter basket can be used instead of paper filters. I don't notice a difference in taste, at least on different days. Maybe side by side there would be. Either way, if I run out of filters, I can still make coffee. - Water level indicator is on the side rather than having to look down from the top. Minuses: - The carafe is harder to pour than a regular carafe. - No way to monitor how full the carafe is. - More expensive than other brands. The beeps are completely normal from my view. Not too loud at all. It didn't even occur to me to comment on them except others have. That's about my only comments on this machine since it is just a coffee maker.

Great coffeemaker if you keep up w/ maintenance,
By CA Steve (Santa Cruz, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
I've used this coffeemaker daily for a little over a year with no complaints. Brews great coffee and no problems with use until the last few weeks.
+ Easy to use + Well built - parts fit together easily + great coffee + thermal carafe keeps coffee warm w/o cooking it - thermal lid means a slow pour. - awkward to fill coffee reservoir - thermal carafe lid prone to clogging over time...if you don't maintain it, you'll have coffee all over the counter. After about a year of use, the thermal carafe lid had become clogged enough with coffee sludge (fine grounds/oil) and hard water deposits to slow the flow/stop the flow through the lid. I woke up one morning to coffee everywhere. Took me a while to figure out what was happening. Here's my fix: I soaked the lid in a bowl of 2 cups hot soapy water + 2/3 cup white vinegar for a few hours, agitating the lid in the mixture every 1/2 hour or so. Then, I rinsed the lid and packed baking soda in every opening and dropped it back into the mixture - hoping the fizzing action of the baking soda+vinegar would help loosen any remaining sludge. I rinsed it again, and whacked it against the side of the sink for a final effort to loosen sludge. Repeated the baking soda + rinse + whacking a couple of times. No more problems. In the future, I plan to do the soak at every Cleaning cycle/every couple of months. Or, if you don't want to deal with it, replacement thermal carafe lids are available for ~$6 + shipping.

Only dextrous people should buy this,

Good and not so good. We bought two, one for regular and one for decaf. The "good" is that it's priced well (on Amazon, it's half of the retail store price!), it's sleek and the carafe has that fabulous Cuisinart quality of keeping coffee hot (not just warm but hot) for hours. However, there's some "not so good." You MUST read the directions before using this product. This coffee pot is not "plug and go" intuitive, given the many settings and buttons. For example, you have to push certain brew buttons in a certain order, which is a pain if guests want to make a pot or half a pot while I'm not around to explain what to do. The top to the carafe is very tight once it's on, which is great because the coffee stays hot, but the tabs that you use to open and close the carafe are very small, so unless you're really dextrous, this would hard. My parents, who are older but not yet elderly, would have problems opening and closing the top. You really need strong fingers. More than once the entire pot brewed onto the outside of the carafe, all over the counter and floor, because the top was not fully closed. Also, the hinged lid on the top of the coffee pot goes back only so far, creating a right angle of 90 degrees. The carafe is so big and the hole where you pour the water so small (and oddly located in the back at the hinge of the lid), that it's really hard to fill the reservoir. There's virtually no way to get 100% of your water into the reservoir, so a few tablespoons of water remain in the pot before you brew. All in all, though, it's a good coffee maker, especially if you're dextrous.

You expect products to improve year after year - for people to learn to make them better. But coffee makers didn't. There was a minor improvement from the Mr. Coffee through the last Braun pot I bought some years ago - and perhaps the biggest improvement is the cone filter. I was very disappointed that my local Wal-Mart only has flat bottomed filter machines.
So I went looking on Amazon (I really don't live near anything). I wanted a cone filter machine, thermal carafe (I hate scorched coffee), and, if possible, one with a special cycle for small pots. I found this machine and it was in my house a couple days later - it met all my criteria. It makes a GREAT cup of coffee. It comes with a permanent filter, and I use a flat scoop per cup. The machine is wet inside but it seals really well. It is quiet in operation, no hisses, little escaping steam. Hours after brewing, the coffee is still in good shape. I remember how the old machine brewed coffee, and, frankly, if I'd known how much improvement I would have gotten, I'd have replaced it long ago. There is one person who has written a review about this machine in which he complains of lukewarm coffee, and I suggest that they take advantage of the warranty, as this machine produces good hot coffee for me. This product has improved. It is still a plastic coffeepot, but it is just better than the one I bought six years ago. Better made, parts fit snugly. It is incrementally better - just what you expect when the makers have had a chance to work with a product for a while. I like the fact that the electronics are high on the machine. I've had a coffee pot die because I had a sink overflow and there was standing water on my counter, that can't happen with this one. Edit: I bought this pot in January, 2009. It is October, 2010, and the pot has gotten more unreliable as time goes on. Specifically, what is happening, is that the lid is blocking. It does not allow the brewed coffee to enter the pot, and it spills all over the counter. I can demonstrate the problem by putting the pot into the sink and dripping water into it. For a cup or so, it lets the water in, and then it overflows, even though you are dripping the water into the pot slowly. The coffee is so good, when it works, that this would only reduce the rating to 4 stars.

Simply Great Coffee,
By Tom Frank "boca-reef-guy" (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: THERM PROG COFFEEMAKER 10C
For the price, this machine brews consistantly rich flavored coffee. I consider myself a coffee snob and I did a lot of homework before purchasing this coffee maker. I was more then ready to return the machine if it did not meet my expectations.
I have only had the machine for a few weeks, but I cannot find any real gripes so far. I don't see any problem with the temperature - it brews plenty hot. And the fact that it brews into a thermal carafe is key. Some people may not realize that a glass carafe with a heat plate may keep your coffee hotter, but it also burns your coffee in the mean time. Who wants piping hot coffee if it tastes burnt? And just because your coffee gets hotter does not mean that it brewed at a hotter temp, which is the most important part of the process. I found that the thermal carafe keeps the coffee plenty hot for at least 2-3 hours (though it will still be warm 24 hours later). I also like the washable gold filter that comes included - no bothering with paper filters (although you can use paper if you want to). Krups makes you buy their reusable filter separate for an extra $20. This machine is simple, easy to use, and easy to clean. No extra gimmicks to only break down later. Probably my biggest complaint is that it does have a majority of plastic components, but find me a machine for under $80 that doesn't. All in all, this is a great find and I am very pleased with my purchase! Highly recommend! |
