5.0 out of 5 stars Evenly browned, crisp waffles, and easy to use
Terrific waffle-maker! The browning is even and the different settings let you make your waffles as soft and tender or as dark and crisp as you want. In my case, I get the very crisp waffles my family likes by using the highest setting: 6. (For very crisp waffles, I also recommend using a recipe for yeasted or raised waffles, found in Rose Levy Beranbaum's _The Cake...

From the first batch of waffles, I knew we were going to have problems with this machine. The waffles came out pretty well, in fact -- light, fluffy, more cooked in the middle, but fairly even. The problem is the electronics, especially the thermostat, which didn't work on day one and doesn't work now (about a year later). Today, the thermostat failed to shut-off...

Terrific waffle-maker! The browning is even and the different settings let you make your waffles as soft and tender or as dark and crisp as you want. In my case, I get the very crisp waffles my family likes by using the highest setting: 6. (For very crisp waffles, I also recommend using a recipe for yeasted or raised waffles, found in Rose Levy Beranbaum's _The Cake Bible_, or Shirley Corriher's _Cookwise_, or Marion Cunningham's learn-to-cook cookbook whose title escapes me at the moment.) The non-stick surface is fantastic. As long as there is some fat in your waffle recipe, there is no need to brush or spray any oil on the grids; the waffles lift right out with a plastic fork or spatula (plastic to protect the non-stick finish!). Cleanup is simply wiping the grids free of beads of moisture and fat with a dry paper towel. My family requests waffles every weekend now, and when I think of the money I am saving by not eating out at a restaurant's brunch buffet. . . ! I highly recommend this waffle-maker!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great waffles--but wear an oven mitt!, May 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
This waffle iron cooks great waffles, but the best thing about it is that it is huge. It takes literally twice the batter than my previous 4-slice round regular waffle iron. Since it takes 5 minutes between waffles, this capacity really speeds things up. The problem with this waffle iron is that it has an awkward clamp that is supposed to hold the lid shut to keep the expanding waffle batter from causing the lid to rise (it's so heavy I don't really see this happening though). When you open the lid, if you don't make sure the clamp is open, you pull the whole waffle iron up in the air; the weight of the thing at that point will cause the clamp to release, bringing the whole contraption down with a bang (and in my case, delaminating a chunk of my kitchen table). Once you figure out how to open it, though, it's okay. A related problem is that when you open the clamp, hot steam spews out at your hand from inside the waffle iron right at the point where you grasp the lid to open it. This could cause severe burning. You definitely need to wear an oven mitt when you use this thing, and keep kids away from it. The recipes included with with the waffle iron are a little on the lazy side, with no separation of the egg yolks and whites and no whipping of the egg whites. You'd be better off getting ahold of better recipes if you're going to go to the trouble of making waffles from scratch. But at least they don't recommend Bisquik.

Today, the thermostat failed to shut-off entirely and the machine came close to catching on fire. A true hazard that I'll have to retire. It's a sad day, when you can't trust the cuisinart name and the industrial-chrome look to deliver quality. I can't recommend another waffle maker, but the Cuisinart machine is one to avoid....

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, August 12, 2002

I was a little disappointed with this product. Initially, it worked great even with store bought prepared waffle mix. The waffles were huge, but light and fluffy and crispy all at the same time. I was delighted. But after it gets thoroughly heated the middle part of the waffle gets very dark and even burns before the outer part cooks. I took the advice of previous Amazon customers and was careful when I lifted the lid, the steam can be dangerous and even burn. This product is NOT child friendly.
The rubber stand does insure that it stays put on your counter and it does not move from where you place it. That is a great feature. The plug cord is very short, so if you are going to plug it into an outlet far from the maker, be sure to get the correct kind of extension cord.
Cleaning is not as easy as I thought. It took some time to get all the mixture out of all the various nooks and crannies of the waffle maker. I haven't figured out how to take the grills out so I can wash them and the book did not supply that information.

1.0 out of 5 stars Soooo Disappointed!, June 23, 2003
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
I had a KRUPS 2-waffle belgium waffle maker and loved it. Flat wore it out. By the time I was ready to get another, I was ready for a four-waffle maker. AFter reading the reviews, chose this one. The thing is a pain to clean up, and the waffles are soggy. Only way to get a crisp waffle out of this is to burn them. Used it twice and threw it away.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best waffler I've ever owned, September 11, 2002
By
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
I am impressed with the Cuisinart 4 slice Belgian. I have been
using it for about a month now without flaw. Taking the advice
of one of my elders, I coated the plates with cooking oil prior
to its first use, carefully brushing with an even coat. It was
easily cleaned with a damp paper towel in a matter of minutes,
and has remained that way since. The waffles are evenly browned
on each side, and the next batch comes out as well as the first.
I do reccommend using an oven mit to open the latch, as I have
made it standard procedure in my kitchen. Storage is by far the
easiest part of using this waffler, the cord wraps nicely
around the base and it stands on its front bracket within a 6 in
wide space next to the microwave. To quote my 11 yr old son after
his first bite... "I am in waffle heaven"

1.0 out of 5 stars Lame at best, January 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
First waffle iron failed in the same way as mentioned by others - thermostat wouldn't turn off and the iron got VERY hot and had that electrical smoke smell. Our second one, same iron but different model with the thermostat controls in front instead of on top was defective out of the box. Dark crunchy in the middle, golden brown on the edges.

Don't get one of these. It's my last Cuisinart appliance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flawed design, November 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
I've been through two of these in the past three years, and I believe the design is inherently flawed. The first one stopped working in the middle of cooking a waffle, about a year ago. To Cuisinart's credit, they honored the 3-year warranty even though I didn't have an actual receipt (I only had the credit card statement that showed the store where I bought it) and replaced it within a month at no charge. The second one just died a few weeks ago, this time the thermostat won't shut off, which could actually be a fire hazard. If you look closely at an actual model, you'll notice that there's a couple of small holes in the upper handle housing that will allow steam to make it through to the thermostat circuitry, and indeed when you cook a waffle you'll get steam coming out from the temperature control knob area. I believe that sooner or later this causes something to short out in the thermostat circuitry. I wouldn't buy another one of these, although they do bake a good waffle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsey construction, August 31, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
Bought this as a replacement for a 10 year old villaware 2-slice. For starters, it is not as deep so the waffles aren't as crisp. Second, the handle in front is too short, when you go to open it, be careful of the steam! The plates do not come out for cleaning. There is a cover on the back end where the hinges are; they are held on by little plastic tabs, and they broke within the first week, exposing the connectors in the back. I'm very disapointed with this model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and tasty waffles, August 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Cuisinart WMB-4 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
Damn simple to use and with no removable parts, it's quite easy to clean. Comes with a few easy recipes and actually isn't too big or clunky, considering each batch is 4 waffles. My only complaint is that when each batch of waffles is finished, they're not super crispy. (30 seconds in the toaster takes care of that.)
