Solid and highly functional,

I've had this item (in its previous incarnation) for about eight years now and I have only good things to say about it. For the commenter who claims that it doesn't grind food, well, it's a food mill, not a food grinder. It allows you to remove the seeds and skins from cooked tomatoes and apples and you can cook those and other foods whole. Fill your pressure cooker with whole apples. Cook for a few minutes at pressure, cool, and run through the mill. No-fuss apple sauce. I'll cook up a half-bushel of the freshest tomatoes. Cool, run through the mill, instant gold! Use the medium milling plate for the best tomato juice of your life. Don't know what to do with those beautiful golden quinces? Break out the pressure cooker and treat as you did the apples. The food mill was made for softened foods - don't expect it to grind, it's not a grinder. Know how to use a tool before you buy it. As for ricing potatoes, I like my big stainless-steel ricer for that. Put the soft-cooked (I like my microwave steamer for this) unpeeled potatoes into the ricer; the fluffy, perfect potato ends up in the bowl and the peels are there for you to lift out. This is one fine product.

Not worth the money,

I bought the mill to make sauces and mash potatoes. It looks good and well made on the surface, but has ridiculous design flaws. When you turn the mill, the knob unscrews no matter what you do, so that you have to constantly screw it back on while you are trying to grind the food. This makes it virtually unsuable. Not only that, but the blades do not gather up the food, so that you have to constantly feed the food into the blade. For such an expensive item to be this poorly designed is unconscionable. I then tried another one with the Bed, Bath, and Beyond label, $50 cheaper. The knob didn't screw off, but still the blades did not grind the food. I'm going to stick with a regular food processor and an old-fashioned hand potato masher. I'm fed up with food mills.

I tried the mill right after it arrived. To be honest the scraper is worthless. It's easier to use a spatula and more effective. The grind seem fine enough and I like the ease of assembly. Now the real proving ground to me will be in the longevity of sharpness and how well it works for other projects, but for the money I was a little disappointed.

Flimsy,

I have the previous version of this food mill by Cuisipro, I've used that one for a little over 1 year and the knob on top has already popped off and it is impossible to get it to stay on anymore. It looks like they changed the knob design since then but I would still stay away from this brand. I was expecting this food mill to last much longer considering the cost.

Works great on seeding my tomatoes, and making mashed potatoes,

I make homemade marinara sauce with canned, whole plum tomatoes. I used to core them and crush them by hand. And then a $150 gift cert to our local restaurant store landed in my lap for my b-day, and now my sauce is noticeably improved as the mill keeps out most of the seeds. It also ceased me having to core the tomatoes by hand, saving lots of time and mess.
I also use it for mashing potatoes, though the process is a slow and semi laborious task. The end result is worth the effort as everyone comments on how creamy and smooth they turn out. I find this "food mill" easy to clean, the handle turns easily, and the construction is of high quality. Highly recommend.

Much better than mashing or straining,

I don't need to use a food mill very often, but for things that require a fine texture without being squashed, this is a great product. In particular, I really like using this food mill for making mashed potatoes. A potato masher squashes the cells of the potato and can make your mashed potatoes gluey. The food mill is much easier to use than a ricer, and the potatoes come out truly light and fluffy. The year I used this to make the mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving, it was the only dish that we ran out of. The food mill is also great for straining raspberry purée and making perfectly smooth tomato sauces.
Although I love this food mill, I have to admit that at this price it's a luxury. If you make a lot of sauces, it's probably worth the money. It comes with three discs of varying sizes and while it takes awhile to get the hang of it, once you do it's very easy to use and easy to clean. Since it is costly, however, and takes up a lot of storage space, it isn't worth it if all you're going to make are mashed potatoes. In that case, get yourself a ricer or stick to making smashed potatoes, because while the texture of foods processed in a ricer is incomparable, it just isn't worth it unless you're a serious cook with money and space to spare. If you decide to get a ricer, however, this is the one to get as it's easy to use and clean. I know some people have had issues with durability, but I haven't found it to be a problem.

I bought this food mill as an upgrade from my ancient aluminum Foley because it got the top rating from Cook's Illustrated magazine. Like several other reviewers, I find that the knob falls off the handle after just a couple of turns, rendering the device practically useless. I have emailed the manufacturer which claims to have 25-year warranties on their products. We'll see what they say. But for a product that costs this much -- now even more expensive than when I bought it -- it should work flawlessly.

Knob Unscrews--Frustrating,
By Spork (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuisipro Deluxe Food Mill (Kitchen)
For the price this food mill is a frustrating piece of poor engineering. Cuisipro missed the mark. I have to spin the knob back down when using it every few turns or it will unscrew and come off. Not real efficient when working with hot food and potentially dangerous.

Applesauce Panic,

In Sept. we moved to our new property where we harvested Concord Grapes, producing 104 pints of delicious grape juice. It was a new process for me and used panty hose as I didn't have cheese cloth. We wanted to make applesauce but although the apples were worm free, the apples were very small and I did not want to peel and core them. I went on line and ordered a food mill from another source and it was a 7.5 qt, shipping was 16.00+ and for an additional 14.00 I could get it delivered in 2 days as we had just picked the apples. It never arrived...very poor customer service, so discovered Amazon.com. I ordered it and within 2 days I had my food mill. It is very sturdy, easy to put together for use and very easy to clean. The plastic clip on bottom of screen does help and I had no problem with it. You have to remember to turn it backwards and it does help to use a spatula to remove excess debris, skin, seeds from food mill periodically, otherwise you can keep grinding away, making small particles of skin and/or seed. My husband and I canned 23 quarts and 26 pints of applesauce and apple butter with no or little sugar. When I ordered the 3.5 qt. size, thought it might be too small, but in fact, the larger one would have been too cumbersome for me to handle. We are very happy with the product, the cost and the service. I look forward to next years grape harvest...the food mill will be perfect..no more pantyhose! We are retired and live in a very rural area, and I see that Amazon.com will be my #1 shopping place!

I have had the same problem with the knob unscrewing itself. I finally took it off and just operated it without the knob. The other thing I don't like is that is sits down too far into whatever you are using to process the food into. Every food mill I have had sits on top, above, the vessel you are sending the food into. I don't like this at all. It does what it claims to do, however, requires more effort than it should. Oxo has come out with a food mill that I am going to check into. The photo shows it situated above whatever you are processing into. Beyond this at the moment I know nothing more.
1/4/2011 Update: I returned the Cuisipro Deluxe Food Mill as I could not stand the aggravation with the handle knob constantly coming off and I did not like how far the bottom of the mill dropped down into the pot. Just not practical. I have replaced it with Oxo's Food Mill which I like allot. It is not hold quite as much as the Cuisipro, but it performs so much better and the bottom does not extend down into the pot or whatever container you are processing in to. |
