It Works!,
This review is from: Cuisipro Herb Keeper (Kitchen)
At long last I've found a way to sustain my Cilantro habit. Every single time I go to the store, I buy at least one bunch of organic cilantro as I put it in everything. But more often than not, part of it turns black before I get to it and wrecks the whole bunch. At $1.50 per bunch, it adds up. Growing it myself did not work at all, so I've been on the look-out for a solution. And guess what? I found it. Cuisipro's Herb Keeper really works and I've yet to throw away yucky black cilantro, or any other herb, since I've started using it.
I was skeptical about this at first, mainly because it's plastic and I have a thing against plastic, plus I suspected it contained BPA since it's a hard clear plastic. However, a rep at Cuisipro assured me that it is SAN plastic and does not contain BPA. I do wish it were glass, but that is my only complaint. I've tried all sorts of ways to prolong the life of fresh herbs, and this is the most effective I've found yet. It's clean and easy to manage. You just wash your herbs really well, pull out any browning or black stems or leaves, and place the stems in the container on the stick. You fill the bottom a with about two inches of water (I change mine at least every other day) and lower the stick down into the water. And voila! Just snip off what you need, when you need it.

Less food waste! A Green Solution!,
By B-Bopp (Providence, RI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuisipro Herb Keeper (Kitchen)
I decided to take a chance on this item as part of my effort to reduce my food waste. Many food items can simply be bought in smaller quantities. But herbs generally come bundled. If I make a dish using cilantro, the remainder of the bunch goes bad before I can use it again. This container kept a bunch of cilantro going strong for almost four weeks! Yes, you do need to change the water-- every few days suffices and it's effortless to do. ( I've noticed a few negative reviews making reference to basil, and some confusion about refrigeration. Basil should *not* be refrigerated.)
Aside from impressively prolonging the freshness of herbs, this container has the added advantage of making your herb supply entirely visible. Countless times, I stuffed a plastic bag of herbs in my vegetable crisper, only to get lost among other bags. So I forget they are there, and then I buy a new bunch of the herb, when I already had the item. Oh yeah-- and plastic bags. I don't put my herbs in plastic bags at the grocery store anymore. I just buy them au natural and put them in my container when I get home. In a effort to be as "green" as possible, I'm not a fan of buying gimmicky items. But this has become a very useful tool for me.

If you use fresh herbs this keeper is invaluable. We have 2 of them in the frig all the time. Simple to use, easy to clean, and they keep your herbs fresh for a week or more. I recently bought 2 more to give as gifts.

Thin #7 plastic,

This herb-keeper is fairly easy to handwash, but I like to stick just about everything in the dishwasher from time to time to get it *really* clean. This comes with a handwashing-recommended note. The markings on the #7 plastic container show a glass and a fork. I guess that means it's food-safe. But, was that marking put on before it came out that bisphenol-A is dangerous? IOW, is that why I shouldn't put it in the dishwasher? My chemist husband says after several washings it will be fine, even if heated and even if it does have bisphenol-A.
That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. OTOH, the plastic is thin (compared to a drinking glass) but so far it seems sturdy enough. It works great. I've always put my asparagus/celery/herbs in tall drinking glasses with an inch of water, or wrapped the base with a damp paper towel, and put a Zip-Loc bag over the top. But, this is better. The top part of the herbs doesn't get squashed when someone jams the milk into the fridge. It's lighter than glass. It keeps the stems off the bottom so water can be absorbed freely, and with its wide base it doesn't tip easily. It fits nicely on the refrigerator door. I'm happy with it.

A disappointment.,

I ordered this for myself and daughter-in-law, hoping that it would help to prolong the life of my fresh herbs, but did not extend it much longer than just wrapping the ends in a moistened paper towel or placing in cup of water. It also is much larger than expected, so takes up a fair amount of space in the fridge. Nice idea but needs some design work.

it's not just for herbs!,

I used it to store asparagus and it was fantastic! The stored asparagus was actually better than the stuff we ate the day we bought it. This keeper not only kept it from spoiling, but perked it up and made it even crunchier! It may take up room in your fridge, but it's worth it. Highly recommend!

this herb keeper is perfect because it serves its primary purpose since the herbs in it are as crisp as when i put them in it about 3 weeks ago. besides it has no technology or moving parts. it should last a lifetime.

I purchased two of the Cuisipro Herb Keepers after seeing them advertised by Rachael Ray. Usually I do not go out and buy something I read about, but am I glad I did this time! My parsley has lasted weeks in the fridge in this little contraption. I have given one to my son and his wife as a gift, and they are equally delighted.

What a big letdown!,

I bought the large Cuisipro Herb Keeper, excited to store all my fresh herbs from my garden only to find out that as soon as I filled it with water it leaked! I heard so many great things about this and right now I don't have one positive thing to say about it. I even wrote to the company weeks ago and nobody has responded! Way to stand behind your product!

Has some big limitations,
By Becky (mass) - See all my reviews

I put this on my wish list for Christmas last year, so I've had it for a year. It is a nice concept but has some real draw backs. First the basket that you put the herbs is is very small. If you buy a bunch of parsley, it won't fit. I did just as well wrapping the herbs in damp paper towels and storing in zip lock bags. I have found that it does keep asparigus pretty well, though again, the basket is so small it's hard to fit a full bunch.
So, to sum up, I really don't use it very much. |
