I recently had a chance to review a short cookbook for people with active UC. Written by Denise and Ross Weale, it is a pocket size cookbook with 100 recipes of low fiber non-dairy recipes. Simple in design and concept, with a cute cover, it is a nicely done book. The strength of it is that there are a variety of recipes, so that it really looks like someone with digestive disease can survive. It is organized as breakfast, bread, soups and sauces, side dishes, pizza, and main course. In the main course part are Grilled chicken burrito, oriental potstickers, lemon chicken, pot roast, shepherd's pie, veal and potato stew, and many more. It is obvious that the authors have put in a variety of foods and styles of cooking. The strength of the cookbook is that is low fiber and milk free, which can be a benefit for symptoms during a flare. Also, the sheer variety of recipes may make the diet during a flare more enjoyable than when one is on one's regular diet between attacks. It is not a book that makes any claims on keeping colitis away. Anyway, the recipes are all doable, so check it out. -- Stephen Holland, M.D.

In 1990, symptoms led Ross' gastroenterologist to diagnose him with Ulcerative Colitis. In response to a severe flare-up and the need to maintain a low residue diet in 1995, they collaboratively wrote "The Culinary Couple's Creative Colitis Cookbook".

Disappointing,
By "acovino" (Burlington, MA USA) - See all my reviews

This book was not worth the money. The pages looked and felt like they were xeroxed, very thin and flimsy. Most of the recipes had ingredients that most with Crohn's or Colitis could never eat! There were a lot of meals that included dairy and too many spices. It seemed to me that these people had limited knowledge of IBD's before they put together this cookbook. If you want IBD friendly recipes, use normal recipes and substitute the necessary ingredients, don't buy this book!

A little disappointing,

I was a bit disappointed with the presentation of this book. I liked the spiral-bound design, but the pages are printed on paper similar to xerox stock. They could've laminated the pages or at least used card stock. I am afraid that the book will be ruined after a few uses. The recipes are ok, however, I would've liked to see more dairy-free recipes. Many of the recipes use soy milk or soy cheese as a substitute which you could do with any recipe. I didn't need a special book to tell me that.
