I purchased this filter to use only for filling my hot tub. The temp dropped below freezing and the bottom housing shattered like someone dropped a grenade in it even though it was empty at the time! My fault. The precautions specifically state to it must be protected against freezing. I went to manufactures site to order a replacement housing but after shipping costs, I discovered I could order the whole unit from Amazon for $3 more. I also noted that the manufacturer recommends replacing the bottom housing every 5 years for the clear housing and very ten years for the opaque housing.

5 stars for a water filter?
Well my current one conked out, and this is the replacement one that fits my existing filters. Best price I could find, no tax, no shipping. Sometimes Amazon really amazes me with the amount of stuff you can find here. Unbolted my old filter, bolted this one in, and saved myself a fortune in plumbing costs. And the $50 worth of cartridges I have won't go to waste. Couldn't be more pleased with both the product and Amazon

Great filter but comes without a mounting bracket. Nearly impossible to mount this filter without a backet. Either buy a mounting bracket for this filter or buy a different brand filter.

I was lucky enough to already have one of these installed in the house I bought in 2004. Just the thing for a well water system. The drinking water gets further refined by a reverse osmosis filter, but no sediment in any of the water in the house.

Just installed this yesterday to replace a 15 year old Omni filter. Purchased it locally (not on sale) for $23 and change. No the filter itself does not leak. The leak came from where the copper pipe fittings screw into the plastic housing. I had the same problem with the Omni 15 years ago. You tighten them just so far in fear on cracking the plastic if you go to far. You get it installed then turn on the water only to find a very slow leak coming out between the pipe fitting and filter housing. So you drain the whole house again tighten them a little more, refill the pipes and it still leaks. I finally gave up and let it leak just a little. The same thing I did with the Omni where it eventually sealed itself probably with tiny little minerals from the water. I'm sure the filter will work fine for many years.

Caution !! When hooking this up, be very careful how much you tighten the inlet side. It cracks easily. My husband use a 6" pair of pliers to tighten it up, and it cracked it. Now I have to buy another one, because I had already bought extra filters.

Ordered two of these with the same results. They leak from the top where the bypass valve enters the unit. Had to return them. I went and purchased a GE equivalent that works perfect.

Culligan HF-360 Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing once installed was wonderful and made the sometimes ugly brown water clear and odorless in about 30 minutes. An unforeseen bonus was the water heater is now stink free too. A task that didn't even work when i manually flushed out the tanks sediments a few weeks before installing the whole house filter. This surprised me but i suppose a mineral is a mineral not sure about the exact science involved here folks. I used the Culligan P5-D Level 4 5 Micron Sediment Filtration 2 Pack Replacement Cartridges in this unit and was a bit skeptical on how they fit but i figure well we shall just wait and see. I intentionally tried to stay with another Culligan branded filter at lowest microns because i knew before hand this water was sketchy.
A tip i learned the hard way was to use a separate 3/4 inch ball valve to isolate the water coming to this unit before installing. This will allow you to properly cut off the water to the filters inlet 100%. This will be the best $3.20 you ever spent if you have high water pressure like i do. This way if the main unit fails or cracks you wont have a flood you cant stop with a simple turn of this valve until you get to the street valve main turn off point if needed. The as they said "Patented shut off valve for easy cartridge replacement" is not very good under high pressure period. This light blue shut off valve on top of the unit will seep or even leak depending on your water pressure when changing filters making a ole big mess for some of you out there. For me that is not really a big issue because the unit is tucked away under the house where a muddy patch is no big deal. Also when you turn the light blue valve on top of the unit if your not cautious your putting direct pressure on the adjacent pipes which might eventually cause them to leak/snap. The Culligan HF-360 Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing however leaked right away from the inlet and outlet first install even with PTFE taped ends inserted. It continued to seep while i attempted to gently tighten my own pvc fittings to the housing unit for the 2nd time to completely stop them from dripping. This was a delicate balancing act because the last thing i wanted to do was crack the housing unit case itself with too much torque or strip out/break the pvc heads off. DO NOT USE ORDINARY PLIERS HERE YOU WILL BREAK THE UNIT! Eventually to my relief it stopped seeping and i was now a happy camper. I used some petroleum jelly on the supplied o ring to ensure a proper seal with the clear housing unit and that was fine first try no leaking. So far this has been a pretty good product for plastic but it certainly will not absorb any type of constant movement or abuse this includes while installing so be careful cause yes it will crack and leak in an instant. Please just try to make sure the Culligan HF-360 Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing is mounted securely to begin with. Remember to properly protect the unit from freezing weather too. The Culligan HF-360 Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housings cheap plastic and lack of proper fittings/mounts supplied with the unit makes it a 4 star purchase in my eyes. If those items where included it would easily justify a higher price and a 5th star to make the majority of installs easier and quicker. But no lets attempt to nickel and dime the customer for some more coin makes sense to me...not.

Good and Inexpensive water filtering,

I bought this 6 years ago. It's a standard design that has been used for maybe 40 years in labs to filter tap water for purity reasons. The new shut off valve in the top is a good idea. I use it under the sink instead of whole-house. The $5 carbon filter has to be changed about once every 6 months before the bad taste of tap water starts to come through again. If you haven't installed a faucet before, think twice before installing this under the sink. Even with experience it took me all day finding parts, going back to the store to get a flaring tool, cutting pipe, and fixing leaks. Open end wrenches for each nut was much better than my best adjustable wrench which was too thick to get in place.
The water goes in at the top from the side and down the walls of the heavy duty clear plastic (marked PPT on mine). Water pressure forces it through the filter which fits in the middle. The water returns back up in the middle to exit on the opposite side of the cap where it came in. The design allows for a large surface area (which does not reduce water pressure) and about 1 inch of filtration thickness. It's a heavy duty plastic. I don't have it whole-house because because I want the chlorine to remain in the pipes as long as possible, so it's under the kitchen sink. Reducing the 3/4 fitting down to 1/2" under the sink was a pain with my copper tubing. It required carefully selected parts including 3/4 to 1/2 reducer (male on both ends), two 1/2" nuts, 4 sleeves, extra pipe, and a miniature pipe cutter. I could only find the "flared" reducer (a pointy end on the 1/2" side) so i didn't need the sleeves, but I had to go get a flaring tool. For whole house use, installation is probably easier, but the $5 carbon filters don't last as long.

Our home water is supplied by a personal well that unfortunately comes with some brownish sediment that discolors the water and makes it taste a little too much like minerals. Completely harmless, but not very pretty, especially for company. Previously I had been looking into expensive water softeners or whole house filters in the $200+ range. Thankfully I found this little guy for $32 and a two pack of 20 micron filters for another $7 (so cheap!).
It took about 5 minutes to install and only required two $0.50 threaded adapters to hook the filter into my main CPVC line from the pump. I also put two $0.15 pipe clamps on either side of the filter to keep the pipe from wobbling too much when changing the filter, although I probably could have left them off and still been fine, the filter is pretty light weight even when filled. I didn't need to run additional electrical lines, drain hoses, shutoff valves or any of the other stuff required by the more expensive filtering systems, which made me happy. It's been a week now, water is crystal clear. I like that I can see the filter through the casing, currently it has a light brown tinge so I know it's working. Since the water has been so clear I think I'll be sticking with the cheaper and longer lasting 20 micron filters, they're supposed to last 4 months or 16,000 gallons, putting my total filtration costs at a cool ~$12 a year. I couldn't be happier! |
