This filter seems to work OK. Its fairly new yet.

Install was simple enough.

But when I turned the water on it had a slow leak around the handle at the top (not between the clear body and the blue top)... since I had it hard plumbed into my system I didn't want to take it off. I turned the water off and did some investigating and under the handle there are 4 screws. I took those out and there is an O-ring around the handle interior. I put a bunch of plumbing silicone grease on the o-ring, reassembled it, and the leak was FIXED.

So be advised... If you get a leak coming under the handle you can fix it. Just be sure to turn the water off first!

I downgraded the product to 3 stars since I had to fix it. Now it seems to work OK.

UPDATE - 3may2013
This filter housing is still going strong. I've probably changed the filter 4-6 times.

I have had no issues with leaks. It seems the initial fix is holding fine.

Maybe the problem was a twisted O-ring and when I removed it and greased it the reason it stopped leaking was that it wasn't rolled?

Anyway, just wanted to update the review to let you know it is working.

If it keeps up this good performance maybe I will upgrade it to 4 stars...

BTW - I am using these filters

I purchased this filter to use only for filling my hot tub. The temp dropped below freezing and the bottom housing shattered like someone dropped a grenade in it even though it was empty at the time! My fault. The precautions specifically state to it must be protected against freezing. I went to manufactures site to order a replacement housing but after shipping costs, I discovered I could order the whole unit from Amazon for $3 more. I also noted that the manufacturer recommends replacing the bottom housing every 5 years for the clear housing and very ten years for the opaque housing.

On paper, this filter probably is one of the best whole-house filters with a transparent housing. I have used others (e.g., Sears) and they were difficult to change the filter. I had this Culligan HF-360A filter installed about 2 years ago. Just like other reviewers' complaints, the valve on the head leaked when it was first turned on. I needed to wrap the valve stem with lots of Teflon tape to stop. Then, it worked quite well.

During the Thanksgiving holidays I took some time off doing house chores. One morning I was washing plates and utensils in the kitchen sink. Suddenly, the water stopped flowing, i.e., no water pressure. It took me 2 seconds to realize that something wrong and I heard noise coming from the basement. I rushed down to the basement and found the filter clear housing EXPLODED, literally - please see the picture that I attached. The water was rushing out form the water main. I was lucky to discover this in no time and I was at home at that time. Or, my entire finished basement/home office will be ruined.

Then, believe it or not, I got another Culligan HF-360A whole house filter from Amazon. Even though the new one had the same model number, the new clear housing seemed not fit the old "filter head" where the in/out water pipes were connected. Then, I removed the old head and installed the new one. To my surprise, the valve did not leak like the old one (I had the Teflon tape ready by my side). I was not sure if Culligan improved the design, or it was just a lucky anomaly!

I certainly hope this filter would last. YMMV!

Great filter but comes without a mounting bracket. Nearly impossible to mount this filter without a backet. Either buy a mounting bracket for this filter or buy a different brand filter.

Just installed this yesterday to replace a 15 year old Omni filter. Purchased it locally (not on sale) for $23 and change. No the filter itself does not leak. The leak came from where the copper pipe fittings screw into the plastic housing. I had the same problem with the Omni 15 years ago. You tighten them just so far in fear on cracking the plastic if you go to far. You get it installed then turn on the water only to find a very slow leak coming out between the pipe fitting and filter housing. So you drain the whole house again tighten them a little more, refill the pipes and it still leaks. I finally gave up and let it leak just a little. The same thing I did with the Omni where it eventually sealed itself probably with tiny little minerals from the water. I'm sure the filter will work fine for many years.

I installed this in the cold water supply line to my new electric hot water heater because we have a lot of calcium in our water. I had to replace the heater elements on the old heater and it's about time to do so again after about 5-years of use. I've never had a lot of luck with filters not leaking in the past and I have installed many in the various homes we have purchased in the past 15 years. I used metal 3/4" short nipples on this and put a PVC union on the supply side and couldn't stop a slow leak no matter how much tape I wrapped around it. I didn't want to tighten it too hard for fear of splitting the housing. I finally gave up, removed the metal nipples and installed PVC with some Teflon tape and no leaks at all. I couldn't find PVC nipples in the plumbing section of the home center but since I have a lot or irrigation piping & hoses for my gardens I tried that section of the store and that's where I found some. The shutoff valve woks nicely on this also but it will expel some water when it releases pressure so put something under it if water on the floor is an issue. I also get the replacement filters on Amazon Subscribe & Save at a 15% discount if I have 4 other items for the same month and it's much cheaper... and easier... than replacing elements and/or water heaters. I also purchased a spare Culligan OR-34 O-ring Culligan OR-34 O-Ring of 4.125-Inch Diameter for it and some plumber's silicone grease to keep it lubricated... don't use petroleum jelly because it'll destroy a rubber seal. I also purchased the UB-1 mounting bracket ...Read more ›
