A great cd from a great artist, April 11, 2002
This review is from: Cult Alf (Audio CD)
Pioneer of Bossa Nova movement in Rio de Janeiro, Johnny Alf (born in 1929) recorded very few, just 11 times in a professional life of half a century. He is a mythological singer, composer and piano player who deserves to be better known around the world (including Brazil).
This cd was recorded alive in Rio in a small club in Ipanema with an acustic trio. You'll find some famous songs of his own ("Eldorado" and "Céu e mar"), two songs of Villa-Lobos ( from "5th bachiana" and "Amazon forest"), two successes by Jobim ("Wave" and "Desafinado") etc.
All of them with the flavour of samba and be-bop that he invented in early 50ths. It is not ethnic or folk music, but very good brazilian jazz, cool and sophisticated.
