Does this hurt you?,
By Cvvvv "sociopath" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

This CD plays like a cornered animal. A cornered animal with serious issues.
If you've ever felt self-destructive, If you've ever seen the inside of a holding cell or a psyche ward, If you are more than just a little anti-social, Then you will appreciate this CD. 1. OD (3/5) - Decent opening track, a little dramatic. 2. Get your Gun (5/5) - Rapid and toothsome, should have been the opening track in my opinion. 3. The Joy Decoys are Coming (5/5)- Great track, starts fast then immediately drops the tempo and the bass kicks hard. Lyrics are about corruption, and they are artistic and venomous. 4. Suicide Soundtrack (5/5) - GO FIGHT KILL GO FIGHT KILL GO FIGHT KILL GO FIGHT KILL 5. Life Support (2/5) - IMO the weakest track on the album. The chorus is still really cool though. 6. Dead America (4/5) - ominous and dangerous, slower than the tracks so far. 7. Sinning by your Side (6/5) - Awesome song, captures the fervor and insanity of dysfunctional romance. 8. Nymphoteens (6/5) - Starts out with just a beat and distorted vocals, builds quickly and explodes, chorus is harmonious but still very very dark. 9. Human Pollen (4/5) - slow and dreary like an amphetamine hangover but with a nice distorted beat in the background 10. Lie.Fake.Money-Make. (4/5) - tempo switches up a little too much for me, still one of the best tracks on the album. 11. Florescent Sunshine (5/5) - Unbelievable. Lyrics are about society and how your job and bank account defines who you are. Intense and desperate and cynical. 12. No one's getting out alive (3/5) - Fast and intense but not particularly memorable. 13. The Mannequin Campaign (6/5) -This is the mannequin campaign/this is the shock value refrain/for the drug addicts (yeah)/and the stoned fanatics (yeah, drugs. drugs drugs drugs drugs....) This track will make your blood move. 14. My Black Hole Girl (3/5) - Slow track. Lyrics about being decieved by a lover and turning numb. 15. Untitled (6/5) - Another instant classic. Song is about paranoid violent state of mind in America today. Lyrics - The antichrist is coming/to kill your young/load your firearms/because security/is a warm, warm gun/ 16. You're my Fix (5/5) - Awesome slow track, great way to end the album. Lyrics are about stalking a girl, referred to as Ms. Doe. If you like angry music, buy this. You will not be disappointed.

Dillinger Fo... I mean Escape Plan?,
By
This review is from: Cult Classic (Audio CD)
Come on this hardly sounds like DEP! I mean I read a bunch of reviews (positive and negative) that say they sound like DEP and I hardly get that vibe at all. Dillinger is a bunch of dude jacking off thier guitars, ugh. Anyways, this is some freshness, lotsa time changes (DILLINGER DID NOT INVENT TIME CHANGES YOU LOSERS) scratchy paranoid lyrics sung in a scratchy paranoid manner about this world that is every moment getting closer to the end. OH man I love Untitled that song is crazy. Anyways the lyrics are pissed and there are a lot of sing alongable parts such as:
NO ONES GETTING OUT ALIVE DRUGS DRUGS DRUGS GO FIGHT KILL! Okay on paper it sounds kinda silly but when you hear it on rekid, they are pretty sweet. How come Ferret doesn't put anything out on vinyl, come on guys I thought you were hardcore!

OHHHH NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!,

Whoever says this is mindless NEEDS to be the MOST mindless person to EVER exist. THE ALBUM COVER ALONE should tell you of the ingenuity of this band. I don't EVEN need to get into that. I got this cd the day it came out and HANDS DOWN is one of the greatest albums of not just `04 but EVER! This is not an exageration. This band has got something to say and they are AWESOME at how they do it. The Dillinger Escape Plan comparison seems to abound around here: it's not Dillinger. Sorry: the closest thing you could THINK of I suppose is if you mixed Deftones, NIN, Dillinger, The Bled, Converge and Orgy and made them have the talent (minus Orgy) of all these bands. This band has created it's own sound: not copied someone else's. When I say this is a good (...) album I mean Tool's AEnima good. There is no joking around. If you don't get this album you are missing out. I'm not playing people.

Lyrical Genius,
This review is from: Cult Classic (Audio CD)
This album may be the greatest album of all time. Lyrically its amazing. I love the dark sarcastic style which is very poetic at the same time. Anyone comparing them to Dillinger is an idiot. This is one of the few bands that is in a category of their own as far as style goes. There's nothing like it.

The musical equivalent of rabies.,
By Human Pollen (Moline, IL USA) - See all my reviews

First off, let me start by saying, here we are 4 years later, and I bet all these tards who compared this album to The Dillinger Escape Plan are feeling mighty stupid after the POS that Dillinger last put out.
Back on topic, here we are 4 years later, and this album STILL is insane. People can go on about Jacob Bannon and people like him, saying that they are the ultimate frontmen in Metal/Hardcore today, but disagree. John Spencer has twice the stage presence, twice the raw talent, and twice the writing capability of anyone in music today. His lyrics are the ultimate satire on the parts of America that we try to ignore. And to everyone that feels like they're stupid and generic, then apparently, you're out of your mind. This is what it feels like to be a cornered animal. GO. FIGHT. KILL.

FYI,
This review is from: Cult Classic (Audio CD)
this album took several listens for me to really get in to it, but now it is one of my favorites. the music is chaotic and very off time. John Spencer, has has since left scarlet and rejoined spifire, brings a brutal in your face feel that is lacking on the latest release from this band.
the lyrics: when i first listened to it, i thought they were a bit elementary and unintelligent. but again, upon further listening, a cutting sarcasm becomes painfully apparent. furthermore, i found out that this album was pretty much a tongue in cheek offering of typical teenage angst, and the band has pretty much said that if you are serious about this moron, you're a moron. this album was made to make fun of such individuals. if you like this, also check out the new spitfire album "self help".

grotesque and painful but impossible to resist...you'll be sucked in to the terror and won't be able to tear yourself away... Bold, brilliantly honest depiction of our hideous world...hand crafted by scarlet. Really great. I'm not kidding... open your eyes to the horror of scarlet

Artistic, violent, and beautiful,
By Jericho Leon "Jericho" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cult Classic (Audio CD)
The lyrics alone is enough to warrant a purchase of this piece of work, because in it you find a sense of beauty in violent poetry. I've read in a magazine that the band considers this album as a big middle finger, and it's not hard to tell that Scarlet wants to make a change in the current state of the music industry. However, in order to make a big impact, they're going to have to try something different from what a lot of hardcore and metalcore bands have done.
Still, this CD is good for people who share the same views with the band, as well as for those who are disgusted with not only the current state of music, but the current state of society as well. If you do decide to get this CD, don't pass judgment until you read the lyrics. You'll see what I mean.

Amazing,

I saw Scarlet for the first time in Toronto and i was blown away. The singer has amazing vocal hooks and some gut wrenching screams. This album has the whole package it has some killer guitar, bass, and drum work. They all help give this album an amazing intensity all the way through. You can clearly see the messages the album conveys and that makes this album one of the best in my collection and it should be in yours!!! If you like Scarlet get this album as soon as possible and if you dont like scarlet get this album as soon as possible and you'll see how wrong you really were.

Imagine for just a second what it would be like if Dillinger Escape Plan and Nine Inch Nails were to work on a project togethor and you might get a pretty good idea of what Scarlet is all about. Now don't misconstrue what I mean by that comment. This album is definetly more hardcore than it is industrial. Cult Classic is an unrelenting album full of quirky timing signatures, throaty screams, a few scattered breakdowns, some occasional clean vocals, combined with suicidal rock n' roll lyrics that are violent and unforgiving. Add that with a touch of industrial and you have Scarlet. Collectively, the album is pretty good and different enough to be enjoyable. However, with 16 tracks that have noticable similarities, it is easy to get lost within the album. Regardless, for a debut album, Scarlet has done a very good job with this album and is further helping Ferret Records to be the top hardcore/metal/punk label out there. Recommended for fans of Dillinger Escape Plan, Between The Buried And Me, and The Red Chord.
