Book Description

April 2005

Cultivate Health from Within is the definitive guide to antibiotics, probiotics, and natural human microecology. Dr. Shahani, who has explored the topic during four decades of scientific research, explains how probiotics prevent the onset and progression of disease, enhance the immune system, and reduce the likelihood of menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis. He then provides treatments for such common problems as anxiety, high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, skin conditions, and yeast infections. In a straightforward manner, this eye-opening book also discusses the current overuse of antibiotics in America. A comprehensive Resource list guides you to recommended probiotic supplements, as well as to good food sources of probiotics.

With Cultivate Health from Within, you will be able to better overcome current health problems and ensure a healthier future for you and your family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food Allergy Help, July 14, 2005
This review is from: Cultivate Health from Within: Dr. Shahani's Guide to Probiotics (Paperback)
My daughter has food allergies that were at one time quite severe- even breathing wheat flour in would cause her to break out in a rash that couldn't then be treated- every type of topical medication made her break out more, and so did most internal medications. I had to take her out of school. She had seen many pediatricians, allergists, homeopaths and an internist and a chirpractor. We finally went to see a doctor in upstate NY who put us on a restricted diet, explaining that often the food allergies are related to family history of disease that aren't categorized as food allergy.

We went on a diet that focused on restoring intestinal balance, replenishing probiotics and reducing allergic reactions. Dr. Shahani was the man who first identified acidophilus and other probiotics and did a lot of research on intestinal health and this book is fantastic. I am a lay person, not a health practitioner, but I found this book easy to understand and comprehensive. It gave me a really solid understanding of the previously mysterious functioning of the intestines and their importance to overall health.

It also has really made me make sure that our diets always have live enzymes and beneficial bacteria and to recognize when we need to supplement our diets with probiotic capsules. My daughter's skin sometimes still breaks out, and we immediately start taking the probiotics, checking stress levels, checking her diet and making sure she has been getting enough sleep.

There is a fascinating section in the book on the effects of sleep on the positive functioning of the GI system.

Read this book. You'll never look at your stomach, your food, or prescription medications the same way!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book contains valuable information!, July 23, 2005

This review is from: Cultivate Health from Within: Dr. Shahani's Guide to Probiotics (Paperback)
I found this book to be filled with very useful and valuable information about an aspect of my health that I hadn't really thought about, namely how "healthy" bacteria impact our health. I think most people automatically think that bacteria are "bad." In fact, "good" bacteria are as essential for our health as vitamins and minerals, maybe more so. Although this book is filled with scientific information, I as a non-scientist found it very easy to understand and use. Not only is the information presented very valuable, there is an excellent resource section in the book that helps you find even more information through books, websites, and companies. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in improving your health.

This review is from: Cultivate Health from Within: Dr. Shahani's Guide to Probiotics (Paperback)
A valuable intro into the role that gut health plays in overall health and prevention of illnesses. I found Dr. Shahani's book to be an important foundation to planning future health strategies for myself and my family.

Where can I buy DDS-1 acidophilus which sounds like the only acidophilus I should consider in starting these supplements?
