Good overview of the world's religions,
By
This review is from: Cults, World Religions and the Occult: What They Teach, How to Respond to Them (Paperback)
This book is an updated version of Cults, World Religions, and You, published thirteen years ealier. It is a good overview about the beliefs of the world's major religions, compared and contrasted with Christianity. Written from the Christian viewpoint, this book is a helpful aid for understanding the basic tenets of belief shared by those of various faiths around the globe. The chapters are fairly short and readable. This book is intended as a general overview for the layman, not a comprehensive encyclopedia.

Enough, but not too much,

I think this book does a great job of giving you a general overview of all types of different religions in light of Christianity. It doesn't overwhelm you if you're not really into apologetics and just want a brief understanding of what others believe. I would recommend this book to any believer who is curious about the beliefs of other religions, the new age movement and the occult. It's a great starting point.

Christian Guide to Cults and World Relgions,
By rodboomboom (Dearborn, Michigan United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Cults, World Religions and the Occult: What They Teach, How to Respond to Them (Paperback)
For 25 years I have used this marvelous "little" book. To begin with, let's address the two charges against it: for and from a Chrsitian perspective, and its length. It's stated intent is neither to be exhaustive nor to be anything other than a critique and guide for Christians.
Enough of that. On to its blessed features. It is a quick look at the cults and world religions at the time it was written, which we must understand is 1980. However, the world religions don't change that much, but they do tend to mutate, as does variations of Christianity as well. What is significant and most useful to this reviewer and I believe to others who will use the book in this way, is its executive summary of each cult/world religion it addresses from both a Biblical evaluation perspective and guidelines for Christian apologetics and witnessing to them. Still a valuable resource after all these years. One can certainly go into more detail on each if desired, using suggestions Boa offers and finding one's own.

A must for both the christian and non-christian,

In order to understand the minefield which we tread daily, please read this book. the evils that surround us, cleverly disguised, and given many appealing names are described in this book. the world as GOD tells us is EVIL. He said do not live in the world and take part in the ways of the world. What he meant is do not get absorbed in the evils of society. because many people do not know the underlying motives of the groups mentioned in this book, we often fail to avoid them. I know some christians who take part in several organizations mentioned. Now they are on my prayer list. I am now asking God to give them light so they can see the truth, and live by the word of God, not the man made ways that suit man and not our Lord. Now each time I walk out the door, I know what evils, and what blasphemies, and what deceptiveness awaits me as I tread the earth. Sooo... what do I do now.... I put on the whole armour of GOD, I take into my understanding that the battle belongs to the Lord, and I understand that Evil does not end until judgement day when JESUS CHRIST returns and Satan is cast into hell. Until then my brethren, we walk through the world which is at current the domain of Satan.. With knowledge of this book I am now safe from the wickedness of the world. I understand the ignorant practices of many religions, the con game which most of them play, and that a FOOL or an UNEDUCATED person would be and is always the favorite target of such groups.......Kenneth Boa, may GOD bless you for presenting the truths about the Unchristian world around us..

Through the lens of Christianity, everything is a cult.,
By Sam Vafadar (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cults, World Religions and the Occult: What They Teach, How to Respond to Them (Paperback)
No doubt I will receive many responses and downvotes from Christians, because let's face it, only a Christian would buy this kind of "book." If one is looking for factual, objective information on world religions, then one must look elsewhere! This book is written by someone who has already made up his mind as far as which religion is the "right" one.
Keep this in mind: Do you want the facts, or do you want information filtered through the nonsense of Christianity? This book presents the latter.

fluff for the weak minded,
By Craig S. Shoemake (Charlestown, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cults, World Religions and the Occult: What They Teach, How to Respond to Them (Paperback)
Anyone who wishes to understand the views of other religions and philosophies had better read books by those people who believe in and practice them. A Christian writing a book on Hinduism or Buddhism is an exercise in futility, because he/she hasn't the mindset, the experience, the worldview that will allow an inside understanding and sympathetic presentation of the other beliefs. Would the reviewer who talked about praying for all those mislead, unChristian people read a book on Christianity written by the Dalai Lama? And even if he read it, would he even for a moment allow himself to take it seriously? No. So, in the end, a book such as this is basically a propaganda missive designed to scare Christians or would-be seekers away from a diligent, objective, and honest inquiry. What a pity that there are people in the world actually willing to buy--and believe!--such junk.

What You Would Expect from a Christian,
By
This review is from: Cults, World Religions and the Occult: What They Teach, How to Respond to Them (Paperback)
What the author writes is typically what you would expect of a Christian... all others are cults except Christianity.Actually, of all religions, Islam and Christianity are definitely cults. Holy wars----sound familiar? Be prepared to kill in the name of your god---sound familiar? Be prepared to sacrifice your son on the altar---sound familiar? Kill all livestock, women and children---sound familiar? What kind of god would demand these to be done? The God of the Holy Bible. Yes, it's a cult but as Christians they should fabricate reasons to explain these. Reading a book about reviewing religions and cults from a viewpoint of a Christian (the author) is simply a waste of time. A book of foolish, biased views... Please recycle the paper. |
