5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for educators, April 28, 2011
This review is from: Cultural Competence: A Primer for Educators (Paperback)
I have assigned this book, or parts of it, in my courses at the university level. My students have found it to be clearly written and helpful in understanding the basic concepts of cultural competence. Although some people often take a defensive posture on these issues (see excellent article by Jean Olson called Detour-Spotting), most of my students are there to learn to be teachers, so, thankfully, they maintain an open mind. The book explains terms, gives examples, and synthesizes research. It is not as dense as some other texts on this topic, and is more cohesive than some of the excellent edited volumes available. For those reasons, it is a good introductory text.

2.0 out of 5 stars Filled with Dense knowledge, February 27, 2008
This review is from: Cultural Competence: A Primer for Educators (Paperback)
This was an assigned text for my university course, and we were tested on the content cover to cover. The authors take quite a stand and repeat their opinions over and over again. The further one gets into the text, the more exclamation marks the author uses. Instead of wanting to help change reality or go forth and be a positive role model, I became slightly irritated with the whining. The book is filled with educating about People of Color with an equal amount of complaining.
