Scholars have long attributed major scientific discoveries to a few men of genius who worked more or less independently of society. Historian Jacob endeavors to show that scientific progress from the time of Copernicus and Galileo was in fact an integral part of Western culture, influenced by certain larger historical developments such as the Protestant Reformation, the invention of printing, and the decline of feudalism. Subsequent discoveries in the 17th and 18th centures became increasingly acceptable to the public because they had become more directly applicable to the industrial and technological needs of European culture.
