4.0 out of 5 stars A good book on a cool topic
While I really like this book enough to give it five stars, I don't think everyone would like it so much, so I gave it four. (Faulty logic? Maybe.) Stephen Duncombe has put together an astounding cross-section of thinkers in this anthology/collection, but it ain't beach reading. Duncombe takes the approach, as he explains in his introduction, that "cultural resistance" is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be more useful
This is a very well-curated collection, but the lack of an index is frustrating. The editor does a nice job of making some connections between the pieces in each section, but could do more to summarize each piece and explain its importance in the literature. Sadly, I won't be using this for my undergraduates.

While I really like this book enough to give it five stars, I don't think everyone would like it so much, so I gave it four. (Faulty logic? Maybe.) Stephen Duncombe has put together an astounding cross-section of thinkers in this anthology/collection, but it ain't beach reading. Duncombe takes the approach, as he explains in his introduction, that "cultural resistance" is different from political resistance -- that all defiance doesn't have to direct itself at the political realm, even though political dissidence is an element to it, but some takes on a social or cultural aim instead. There's so much in the book that attempting to summarize it would be kind of pointless, and too long-winded. I'll end by saying: if you like writers like Camille Paglia or Noam Chomsky . . . or music like punk, you will like this book. If you don't, you probably won't.
