"The book's sixth incarnation includes new sections on organotypic culture and different cell and stem cell types". (Veterinary Times, 11 April 2011)

From the Back Cover

The most complete resource on the techniques, equipment, principles, and practices of animal cell culture

Since publication of the previous edition of this benchmarktext, numerous types of equipment and materials have changed andnew specialized techniques have been developed, particularly in thearea of stem cell research and tissue engineering. These and otherdevelopments have been incorporated into this rigorously revisedand expanded Sixth Edition of Culture of AnimalCells, the leading text in the basic methodology of cellculture.

This authoritative volume offers a complete background relatedto growth of animal cells in culture. It contains many specializedprotocols and advice on how to apply some of the basic protocols toteaching cell culture. Beginning with laboratory design, safety, validation, and bioethics, then continuing with preparation ofmedia, primary culture, and cell lines through to characterizationand authentication, contamination, specialized techniques, andtroubleshooting, the unparalleled coverage includes:

  • An all-new section addressing the additional caution requiredonce a primary culture is converted to a cell line

  • Differentiation in stem cells and reprogramming of adult cellsto form stem cells

  • A new section and protocol on cryopreservation byvitrification

  • Separate sections dealing with epithelial cells, mesenchymalcells, neurectodermal cells, and hematopoietic cells, a new chapteron germs cells/stemcells/amniocytes and non-mammalian/avain cells(other vertebrates and invertebrates)

  • A new section on organotypic culture

  • Increased emphasis on contamination and misidentification(including cross-contamination) with revised protocols fordetection and elimination

  • A problem-solving chapter, glossary of terms, advice on sourcingmaterials, and list of suppliers

This landmark text presents the most accessible andcomprehensive introduction available to the culture andexperimental manipulation of animal cells and is indispensable forthose in the field, including clinical and biopharmaceuticalresearchers and scientists, graduate students, laboratory managersin cell and molecular biology labs and genetics labs, trainees, andtechnicians.

This text gives a thorough account of cell culturing as well as the protocols and concepts of maintaining cell lines in a laboratory. The text gives insights to help troubleshoot any difficulties encountered. It was worth the purchase. I recommend this textbook especially anyone who is considering starting the own lab that includes cell culture.

This book absolutely contains a wealth of knowledge. However, it is written with the assumption that the reader is already very familiar with many tissue culture and bio-lab terms and concepts. Terms are used without being defined, and many of the technical terms are not located in the glossary. The book is written more in the format of a formal scientific paper. Information is provided, but not necessarily explained. I have no doubt that this book would be a good reference for a laboratory professional who wants to transition to cell culture from a similar field. If you are a student like me, chances are good your current education is not sufficient to appreciate the full value of this text, but instead find it frusturating and painful to read.
