Fascinating introduction to music theory and culture. Made me realize that somewhere deeper in this line of thought is an explanation for why I like many different kinds of music. My fav is definitely Jazz so Mr. Henry and I are starting from the same base. Culture and the Pentatonic Scale opened a new path for me explore. [...]

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak. March 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
-reads like it was written for a ten-year-old
-not a single citation or reference to other material for further reading
-depth of material barely does the topic justice

2.0 out of 5 stars superficial June 14, 2013

This book is a great idea which unfortunately falls short of the promise it has. The Pentatonic scale is probably the most important scale in music. As Henry points out, nearly every culture uses it. But the book needed to be longer. It also needed citations. One howler is that Henry states 'the Pentatonic scale does not originate in western culture. ' not much later, he shows how British and Scottish music used it. Now, he may think, and there are arguments for this. However, Henry doesn't trace the origins of the scale in specific depth to allow such points to go unchallenged. The Pentatonic scale is the oldest known scale. It needs a full length study. This book has some promise, but it is not the final word.

Richard Henry has managed to capture the essence and soul of the world's oldest melodic structure. You don't have to be a music theory geek like me to enjoy this eBook but it helps! The Pentatonic Scale's legacy can be scene in nearly every continent, in countless forms, influencing more songs and musical movements than could ever be measured. This eBook is a great read. Very well-written and informative. Highly recommended!
