Book Description

David Matsumoto and new co-author Linda Juang show students the importance of culture in explaining and understanding human behavior in this new edition of the market-leading text, CULTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY. Using a cross-cultural framework to evaluate psychology, and reflecting the most current research, the authors engage students by inviting them to understand and raise questions about traditional knowledge and theories, and about the relationship of culture and psychology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ganie DeHart, SUNY Genesco: "I found it to be the best of the various cross-cultural textbooks I've used over the years. I have been teaching this course for 16 years, and I've probably used every undergraduate cross-cultural textbook that has come out during that time."

Joy Stratton, CSU Northridge: "It addresses all aspects of psychology instead of focusing on Abnormal Behavior or Treatments or focusing on just one definition of culture (e.g. race, gender)."

Nan Sussman, College of Staten Island: "Matsumoto and Juang is currently the most comprehensive and student-friendly textbook on the topic of culture and psychology." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Just letting everyone know, there are a lot of changes between the older edition and the newer edition. Normally I am able to use older edition textbooks for classes, but not this one! The chapters changed and there are a lot more updated studies not part of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cultural psychology textbook I have read, April 23, 2011

A very objective, insightful look into the culture and psychology of different cultures. Well written, and uses good citations. Focuses a lot on the differences of individualistic cultures versus collectivistic cultures. Some people consider this an overgeneralization, however, since the Western culture is Individualistic, it provides practical explanations and insights as to why other cultures seem so foreign to us (asian cultures, arabic cultures, etc).

Typical psychology text. Good & interesting info, yet disturbingly wordy. APA should make limiations on how much you can fatten up what could be a brief senrence.
