5.0 out of 5 stars Culture Shock, April 8, 2002
By
This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
I think Culture Shock is one of the best non fiction murder stories I've read since Joseph Wambaugh's " The onion field".
You feel like you're part of the investigating team. It puts you right alongside Ross, Kevin, Tony and all the others investigating this cowardly cold blooded killing. I give it the highest rating of FIVE STARS. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. I would love to see Ross koepp continue his writing, but not at the expense of some other innocent life.

Thanks to Ross Koepp and the rest of the team for a job very well done, and thanks Ross for this very well written book. Keep up the good work.

Don Edwards

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Case!, December 6, 2001

Ross Koepp takes us deep into the inner-workings of a murder investigation and lends insight to the toll such cases take on investigators. I was indeed awed with the skill of these men who, with a lot of hard work and a little luck, identified and located the killers of an innocent visitor to America. I am anxiously awaiting Sergeant Koepp's next book as I am confident there are many more remarkable stories yet to be told.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Crime Meets True Introspection, September 25, 2001

This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
Culture Shock is an amazing book. Gisela Plefger, a German tourist, is murdered on a mountaintop in California. Her murderers are themselves from a distant land. Her husband, Klaus, is also shot and he makes a harrowing trip down the mountain for help. Sgt. Ross Koepp, the detective in charge of the investigation, takes us on a journey He leads us not only into the heart of the investigation, but into amazing speculations of the socio-political atmosphere that contributes to the local Asian community gang dynamic.
We know, from the preface of this book; a quotation from Simone Weil on the nature of rootlessness, that this is no ordinary true crime book. Koepp's fast paced writing keeps us engaged as we follow the story from the woman's shocking death to the complex and lengthy investigation of the crime. This book is captivating and alive, the characters are well described and captured in all their humanity. This book will have the audience asking along with Sgt. Koepp, "Why?" and applauding his efforts at arriving at an understating of the nature of the roots this kind of senseless violence.
