5.0 out of 5 stars Culture Shock, April 8, 2002
By
This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
I think Culture Shock is one of the best non fiction murder stories I've read since Joseph Wambaugh's " The onion field".
You feel like you're part of the investigating team. It puts you right alongside Ross, Kevin, Tony and all the others investigating this cowardly cold blooded killing. I give it the highest rating of FIVE STARS. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. I would love to see Ross koepp continue his writing, but not at the expense of some other innocent life.

Thanks to Ross Koepp and the rest of the team for a job very well done, and thanks Ross for this very well written book. Keep up the good work.

Don Edwards

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Case!, December 6, 2001

This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
Ross Koepp takes us deep into the inner-workings of a murder investigation and lends insight to the toll such cases take on investigators. I was indeed awed with the skill of these men who, with a lot of hard work and a little luck, identified and located the killers of an innocent visitor to America. I am anxiously awaiting Sergeant Koepp's next book as I am confident there are many more remarkable stories yet to be told.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Crime Meets True Introspection, September 25, 2001

This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
Culture Shock is an amazing book. Gisela Plefger, a German tourist, is murdered on a mountaintop in California. Her murderers are themselves from a distant land. Her husband, Klaus, is also shot and he makes a harrowing trip down the mountain for help. Sgt. Ross Koepp, the detective in charge of the investigation, takes us on a journey He leads us not only into the heart of the investigation, but into amazing speculations of the socio-political atmosphere that contributes to the local Asian community gang dynamic.
We know, from the preface of this book; a quotation from Simone Weil on the nature of rootlessness, that this is no ordinary true crime book. Koepp's fast paced writing keeps us engaged as we follow the story from the woman's shocking death to the complex and lengthy investigation of the crime. This book is captivating and alive, the characters are well described and captured in all their humanity. This book will have the audience asking along with Sgt. Koepp, "Why?" and applauding his efforts at arriving at an understating of the nature of the roots this kind of senseless violence.

4.0 out of 5 stars The human side of the story, May 5, 2002
This review is from: Culture Shock: Based on the True Story of the Murder of Gisela Pfleger (Paperback)
Culture Shock by Ross R, Koepp is the absorbing first person account of the investigation of the murder of Gisela Pfleger in the Californian San Jacinto Mountains. The perpetrator was an Asian youth whose family was in the process of trying to adjust to a new society and culture. The investigating officer shows the human side of his police work: long working hours, empathy with the victims, thoughts, feelings, and even tears on the long road to justice. That's what makes this book worth reading, the necessary toughness, which is tempered by sensibility. I am not really a reader of detective novels, but I enjoyed this one because it rings true. Hope you do to.

For a first time author, Mr. Koepp did an excellent job in allowing the reader feel like they are apart of the investigation. It was a page turner that made me want to not stop until the book was finished. I hope that Mr. Koepp continues to write and let us, the reader, follow along in another true life homicide investigation

This is an excellent true-crime book, written by the police sergeant in the best position to tell you how it all went down. Then-Segeant Ross Koepp lead the investigation into the slaying of Gisela Pfleger by Hmong and Laotian street gang members in an unlikely place, the idyllic San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California, taking you right into the staff room of the Hemet Police. Pfleger's was one of the notorious German tourist killings of the 1990s which put such a stain on the U.S. at the time. Koepp respectfully recounts working among the local Hmong immigrant community in tracking down the teenaged gang members behind the crime, and does so in an easily read, lively prose. Recommended for anyone who wants to see how a good police force gets the job done.

This was one great book. I did not want to put it down for anything. Every time I would put it down, I would wonder what would happen next and pick it up and start reading again. It only took me about a day to read it. With the way the book was written, I thought I was there with the Sgt. and his team. I started to feel the pain, anger and sorrow that those involved thought. I almost yelled out when the shooter was caught in Utah. Great book!!!!!!!!!!!!
