Don't leave home without it,

What a fantastic book. I wish I had found this book before my husband's first assignment. If you know in advance the changes that your relationship and your kids are likely to through before you go abroad, you will be able to put things in perspective as they happen, and plan to navigate the bumps ahead. I've lived ten years abroad and I found Robin's observations bang-on. Her writing style is delightful and entertaining, and she will lift a great deal of stress from your shoulders. I'm now living happily in Egypt and this book is constantly on loan to friends here. Her book on "A wife's perspective" is also good, but if you have kids you'll find most of the relationship material well encapsulated here, so you don't need both. Oh - and don't forget to check out her website.

We are getting ready to move and taking a 1-year-old. I found the nuggets of info in A Parent's Guide really helpful. It's sort of general (like explaining what a third culture kid is), but a really good start on research for parents raising children overseas.
