About the Author

A student of the sacred sciences since childhood, deTraci Regula explores the mystical through writing, dreams, and art.  She has been a Priestess of Isis with the Fellowship of Isis since 1983.  With David Harrington, she is the co-author of the upcoming biography of their friend Scott Cunningham, Whispers of the Moon.  In addition to work in the animation industry on such secular epics as the animated version of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, she also produced and directed the video programs Herb Magic with Scott Cunningham and Witchcraft: Yesterday and Today with Raymond Buckland.  She has traveled to sacred sites in Turkey, China, Japan, and Britain, as well as the United States.

When not writing, deTraci Regula practices Taoist painting and exploring the family geneaology.  Named for her ancestor William deTraci, deTraci Regula comes from a long line of pagans and freethinkers.  One of her ancestors was chastised by the local bishop for "consorting magically with the horses," though what that means exactly has been mysteriously excised from the family histories.  Another ancestor, a Protestant during the reign of the Catholic Queen, "Bloody" Mary, was dug up and burned as a heretic after his death because of certain comments he made in his last will and testament.

Scott Cunningham practiced magic actively for over twenty years. He was the author of more than fifty books covering both fiction and non-fiction subject matter; sixteen of his titles are published by Llewellyn Publications. Scott's books reflect a broad range of interests within the New Age sphere, where he was very highly regarded. He passed from this life on March 28, 1993, after a long illness.

David Harrington lives in Chula Vista, California and has a long-term interest in the mysteries of household magic.

Cunningham's Magical Sampler is a stellar collection of magical writings from one of the most respected Wiccan Authors of our time. Scott Cunningham became a pivotal force in the Wiccan community as an Author and teacher. He was one of the key figures in pushing Wicca and Witchcraft into the mainstream.

As you read through the Magical Sampler you are reading through Cunningham's personal collection of articles and notes. This collection of information is filled with diverse ideas and topics, from history, to folklore, to herbology and spells. The information is both practical and intermediate, giving everyone something to muse on.

Cunningham always writes in a way that makes you feel like he is right there, gently instructing you with each step. Nothing about this text is hard to follow, but on every page is a new layer and facet of magical information. This is truly a treasure for anyone interested in Wicca and Witchcraft.

This isn't a book that you have to read from start to finish, it is a flexible treasury of information that you can thumb through, as you need. As you read through you get the impression that nothing within is hard-fast rule, but rather suggestions to add to your personal practice.

One thing that I found very fascinating about the text is how it acts almost as a historical account of Cunningham's life and the time that he was living in. He explores spellcraft and technology and he talks extensively on the mystical identity of Hawaii. So much of his personality comes through, making the text much more relatable.

The book is laid out in five distinct sections: Personal Power and Growth, Instruction and Applied Magic, Herbs and Food, Nature and Earth Power, and Ancient Cultures and Lore.

I have been a Wiccan for many, many years and like so many others out there, I can't stress strongly enough how much of an impact Scott Cunningham made in my life and in my Wiccan practice. There's literally thousands of us out there who can point to his work and say if it weren't for his books we might not be Wiccan today.

I have slowly but surely over the years made sure to collect everything Scott ever wrote.... with the exception of the fiction he published to pay the rent on those lean months (and I am slowly tracking all them down too!) the one glaring omission in my collection was all of the material he contributed to the early years of Llewellyn's Magical Almanacs.

This book contains all of the almanac submissions in one handy volume. How amazing to grab it all out of the old books and re-publish it all in one easy reference. If you don't have it, you also want to get Cunningham's Book of Shadows. I know quite a few people have argued that it's reused material from his other books. They are missing the point. It is compiled into one single perfect working BOS so that you don't HAVE to dig through all his other books in search of one particular thing or to work from his rituals.

That book, and this one, are perfect companions for continuing to work with Cunningham's magic long after he's passed away, and long after we've reached the point where we need to keep reading his books over and over just trying to remember where that spell was for getting rid of depression or what page his Samhain ritual was on. LOL NOW we can just re-read them because we want to.... because they bring back cherished memories.

I chose to give this a 5 star because once I started reading I didn't want to stop. It was interesting and gives many ideas to follow thru with. I wish it had more writings of Cunningham's in it.

Love the book, I think its great. It has lots of quick and easy on the go spells and some pretty interesting information. I'd recommend his other books on Wicca though.

I have read and enjoyed this author before. I have this book downloaded on my Kindle, and am enjoying reading short chapters at my own pace. Good for those times when you have a few minutes to spare, and wish to use productively. I give it an ok, because a lot of it is old stuff, but there is enough in it to give me a little inspiration or jog my memory. I have no regrets in buying it at all.
