Book Description

Cup of Comfort April 1, 2008
"A Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers" is a celebration of the millions of mothers who go it alone. Suitable for single mothers of all kinds, the book contains heartwarming stories of the unbreakable bond between mother and child. Readers will meet more than 50 heroic single mums, including: Kathy, who leans on a friend in her time of need - and is able to return the favour when the same friend becomes a single mum herself; Donna, who never misses one of her son's games - despite being the only single mother in the stands; and, Rachel, whose 3-year-old daughter, Mae, provides comedic relief after a less-than ideal first date.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When my father died in March 2007 I felt lost and alone and I wanted to do something that would last, so I decided to write a story for a Cup of Comfort anthology. I had submitted stories to Cup of Comfort and Chicken Soup before and never got a response. When I sent them Chili Night, I got an immediate response and a contract. I haven't looked back since.

Chili Night was written about a time in my life when I was working two jobs and taking care of my three boys without any help from my family or their father. It was a difficult time for me and for them, but moments like the one described in the story, the moments when there is laughter following the tears, gave me what I needed to go on. In writing the story, I hoped to touch another single mother's life and remind her that even when things are at their worst, life can and will surprise you.

If you've been a single mom, you know how your days go. Some days you laugh, some you cry, and some you just need support. These stories are all that and more. The women who contribute this stories have been there or ARE there, coping, living, loving their children, learning to love themselves. I enjoyed this book. I planned to read a story each night and keep it on my nightstand, but once I started, I carried it around with me all day. I read it at the doctor's, in the car, while making dinner, and by the end of the day, I was finished and wishing there were more stories.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cup of Libel anyone? Writings for the Bitter Ex-Wife, April 14, 2010

Do you want to read embellished stories and lies? Well here's the book for you!

I thought the Cup of Comfort series was supposed to be empowering since it's in the self help section in book stores. But imagine my shock when I read something in this book written by someone I know, defaming her ex-husband, whom I also know very well, with ridiculous accusations and lies. It felt like reading a tabloid! I can't give the details here because I've seen her brutal vindictiveness first-hand and want no part of it.

Is it empowering for single mothers to publicly bash their children's fathers? Stop feeling like such a victim in life, take responsibility for your own feelings and sense of happiness, and learn about REAL self empowerment. No one wants to read stories by chronically unhappy women who hold onto resentment and thrive on blaming/punishing others for their problems. I just wonder if this women ever thought how it would affect her children if they were ever to read what she wrote. Either she wants them to resent their father, or she just doesn't care how her stories might damage them.

The main cause of most problems is people constantly feeling a sense of lack and/or thinking they are being victimized by something. The solution is not in dealing with the problem but in dealing with yourself: Stop thinking you're a victim. Otherwise you are just being a drain on everyone around you. Including your children.

Just remember that you can't believe everything you read, even if you think it's from a reputable publisher. It amazes me that the people from Cup of Comfort would take a liability risk and let something like this slip through.

This was certainly not as good as some of the other editions. I was disappointed that often, I couldn't find the upbeat moment.... or the certain something that would allow me to empathize with the writer.
