**** Little girls dream of the perfect, princess wedding, but, often as not, the wedding can be a little quirky. In the tradition of the Chicken Soup books, this little volume collects stories recounting the funny, touching, and endearing moments that have made weddings and marriages across the years special. Unusual meetings, enduring loves, potential catastrophes, pranks, and fond memories are only a few of the things that are highlighted in this anthology that shows what is truly important about the oldest institution. This is a truly heartwarming gift for any member of a wedding party. ****

I purchased this book on sale because the concept intrigued me, though I'm obviously not a member of the target audience, and I was not disappointed. It consists of short, mostly four page true-life (or at least possessing the ring of truth) inspirational stories of "the most important day of your life" as it claims on the cover, and I must agree. Most stories are about the authors' experiences, but a few are about people they know, usually relatives. Not every story has a happy ending, but most do, and though I found a couple of clunkers, most were pretty good, neither smarmy nor pollyannaish, ideal for reading in small bits, then flipping to the end to read a paragraph about the author.

Additional books in the series are A Cup of Comfort: Stories That Warm Your Heart, Lift Your Spirit, and Enrich Your Life, A Cup of Comfort Cookbook: Favorite Comfort Foods to Warm Your Heart and Lift Your Spirit, A Cup of Comfort for Christmas: Stories That Celebrate the Warmth, Joy, and Wonder of the Holiday, Cup Of Comfort Devotional: Daily Reminders of God's Love and Grace, A Cup of Comfort for Friends: Stories That Celebrate the Special People in Our Lives, A Cup of Comfort for Inspiration: Uplifting Stories That Will Brighten Your Day, A Cup of Comfort for Mothers and Daughters: Stories That Celebrate a Very Special Bond, A Cup Of Comfort For Mothers & Sons: Stories That Celebrate A Very Special Bond, A Cup of Comfort for Sisters: Stories that Celebrate the Special Bonds of Sisterhood, A Cup of Comfort for Teachers: Heartwarming Stories of People Who Mentor, Motivate, and Inspire, A Cup of Comfort for Women: Stories That Celebrate the Strength and Grace of Womanhood, A Cup of Comfort for Women in Love: Inspirational Stories of True Love And Lifelong Devotion, A Cup Of Comfort For Christians: Inspirational Stories of Faith, Cup of Comfort for Grandparents: Stories That Celebrate a Very Special Relationship, A Cup Of Comfort For Mothers To Be: Stories That Celebrate a Very Special Time, Cup of Comfort for Nurses: Stories of Caring and Compassion, A Cup of Comfort for Families Touched by Alzheimer's: Inspirational Stories of Unconditional Love and Support, A Cup of Comfort BIG Book of Prayer: A Powerful New Collection of Inspiring Stories, Meditations, Psalms, A Cup of Comfort for Writers: Inspirational Stories That Celebrate the Literary Life, Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers: Stories that Celebrate the Women Who Do it All, Cup of Comfort for Parents of Children with Autism: Stories of Hope and Everyday Success, A Cup of Comfort for Military Families: Stories that Celebrate Heroism on the Home Front, A Cup of Comfort for Horse Lovers: Stories that Celebrate the Extraordinary Relationship Between Horse and Rider, A Cup of Comfort for Dog Lovers: Stories That Celebrate Love, Loyalty, and Companionship, A Cup of Comfort Devotional for Mothers, A Cup of Comfort for Cat Lovers: Stories that Celebrate our Feline Friends, A Cup of Comfort Book of Prayer: Stories and Reflections that Bring You Closer to God, A Cup of Comfort for Divorced Women: Inspiring Stories of Strength, Hope, and Independence, A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors: Inspiring Stories of Courage and Triumph, A Cup of Comfort for Courage: Stories That Celebrate Everyday Heroism, Strength, and Triumph, A Cup of Comfort Women of the Bible Devotional: Daily Reflections Inspired by Scripture's Most Beloved Heroines, A Cup of Comfort for Parents of Children with Special Needs: Stories that Celebrate the Differences in Our Extraordinary Kids, A Cup of Comfort for Dog Lovers II, A Cup of Comfort for Adoptive Families: Stories that Celebrate a Special Gift of Love, A Cup of Comfort Book of Christmas Prayer: Prayers and Stories that Bring You Closer to God During the Holiday, A Cup of Comfort for the Grieving Heart: Stories to Lift Your Spirit and Heal Your Soul, A Cup of Comfort for a Better World: Stories that Celebrate Those Who Give, Care, and Volunteer, A Cup of Comfort Book of Bible Promises: Stories that Celebrate God's Encouraging Words, and A Cup of Comfort for Fathers: Stories that Celebrate Everything We Love about Dad.

Finally, if by the end you are thinking, "I could write something like this," you are in luck because the last item before the list of contributors is about how publishers are always soliciting (and offering to pay for) pieces for upcoming books. It's a flat, nonnegotiable fee, but it's better than self-publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile cup of comfort, January 15, 2007
This review is from: A Cup of Comfort for Weddings: Something Old, Something New (Paperback)
What a charming anthology! After going through my sister's recent nuptuals, I was about "weddinged out," so when I picked up the book, I wasn't expecting to really enjoy it...but I did. The stories were so varied, and rather than focusing on the weddings, you learn the love stories behind them. It would be a great gift for any bride feeling stressed out by the logistics and overwhelming organizational tasks of getting married because it takes you out of "bride" mode and puts you back into "love" mode. And what stressed bride-to-be doesn't occasionally need a reminder that the wedding is just a few moments, but the marriage is forever?
