UPDATE 1/6/13

One side of the magnet set cut through the threads. That's not a problem as it stuck to the other magnetic half and didn't get lost.

Although the stamped aluminum "button" half was still attached, I didn't bother with it. I just re-sowed the magnet half to the dog coat. Without the aluminum "button" I think that I was able to sow it on much better.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I say adequate to good because I wanted something much stronger. But as it turns out these are good enough for my needs and would in all probability be more than adequate for most jobs or anyone else.

The 2 objects in the top of the picture are stamped aluminum back plates to keep the threads from pulling through the fabric. As such they're ok, but using buttons would be much better, and on thicker material you may need nothing at all.

I have an old (16 years) Shih-Tzu. In the winter she needs a coat when we go for walks. The problem is that the only coat that she doesn't try to get out of has Velcro that is wearing thin. Has anyone tried sewing Velcro by hand? Not much fun.

After sewing the magnetic buttons to the coat I found that they pull apart fairly easily (unlike when you take them out of the little bag). BUT, it worked out just fine. No problem.

In the end, I like them and will buy another set.

Greetings.
Although some planning is needed for securing these... I prefer them to the material-rending solutions that are out there. Magnets really change the utility of pockets and bags, and this is (so far) the only item I've seen in years that allows for the most creative placement without damaging the material.
Features include:
1. matched, inset magnets for one closure 9/16th diameter. Very strong magnets.
2. mounting disks for both (which helps stabilize the magnetic clasp). These are reasonably attractive.
3. a bit pricey.
4. they are very strong magnets, so be prepared to work on adequate fastening.
5. appear to be made in US!

I hope this is helpful.

these make a nice firm closure when you need easy access and fumbling with a button will slow you down

I like the concept of the magnetic button. Haven't used them yet, but nice looking. I gave it a score od 3 only because they are much smaller than I anticipated. Good for small projects.
