I picked this book up after reading an op-ed by the author about GMO foods. I am not a mother, but I am a science-minded person that allows research to guide me (and I don't mean internet blog research). I found this book to be a a nice change of pace from the scaremongering that I read all too often in the news, spread through poorly researched blogging, and seeping into the minds of people at large (who then think they are well-informed). I wish this book had a little more detail in some of the studies it presented that debunked popular claims, but it's s great starting point for anyone that wants to do their own research into REAL studies (it has a lot of great resources listed).

My critique is this: I think that this book is definitely the antithesis of the alarmists that the author is writing against, so she is on-point there. What I don't like about it, and what keeps it from five stars for me, is it is EXACTLY the antithesis of what the author is writing against (I felt like it was a little TOO much anti-"them" propaganda with the word "alarmist" appearing way too often). I agree with what the author is trying to convey to the reader, I just think it could have been presented better. On the other hand, this is the type of book that is out there to get you to think, so maybe the excitement in the writing is suppose to get the reader excited about researching a topic and going against popular opinion (based on scientific evidence).

What a delightful book by Julie Gunlock! Gunlock provides a much needed, common sense look at how our culture is needlessly stressing out parents. Moms everywhere should read this laugh-out-loud funny book to get a sense of why they hear so many hyped warnings from the media and to learn to recognize the real keys to raising healthy, happy kids.

This book was very informative. Humorous at the same time. It encourages me to use a common sense approach in reacting to next weeks ‘dire warning’ that something I’ve been doing for my last 68 years may reduce my life span to less than 50. Example: yes, I have drank from a garden hose from time to time. I’m recommending this book to my friends so they don’t get spooked every time the media announces a new study of what’s bad for you. Hardly a week goes by that a firestorm of warnings sweeps through all the media shows telling us about a new danger in our everyday habits. What the media doesn’t tell you is exactly how much of the ‘bad stuff’ was fed to a rat in order to make it sick, or what industry (like the bottled water company) was behind the study that your tap water is deadly. Ms Gunlock’s has a humorous writing style and yet her examples are very well sourced. It’s a worthwhile read for anyone who has ever been influenced by the media hype.

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend, and it was not only enlightening on the relationship between alarmists, the government, and the media, but it also confirmed the fact that media "science" is not often based on real science. There is no need for moms to be frightened by the constant warnings... This book reminds us that we are intelligent human beings who can use our brains to make the decisions that are best for our families and not be so easily influenced by these scare tactics.

The book could have been distilled into about two chapters. I was looking for more specifics and less opinion. The chapter on BPA and Pesticides was the kind of information I was looking for - some specific information to counter the organic mommy mafia.

Everyone should read this book! I ordered because I am so tired of hearing about all the things we should worry about and keep away from. This books was easy to read, fun, factual and backed up with research information at the back. Anyone can check her information as a follow up. Whenever I hear of some new thing that we should shun I am always suspicious and start researching to find out the facts and the truth. This book validates what I have thought all along.
