Book Description

January 2000
Ordered by Jupiter, to keep their matchmaking hands off mortals, Cupid and Venus resort to subterfuge, determined to help Southern belle lawyer, Merrill Prescott, and construction worker, Jason Stavros, fall in love and live happily ever after. Then they discover that Jupiter plans to seduce Merrill and wants Cupid and Venus out of the way. Merrill Prescott can't believe she just became legal co-guardian to a dog worth seventy-five million dollars. Not only does she have to move in with sexy, hard-working, Jason Stavros, baby-sit the pampered pooch, fend off a pair of greedy dog-napping relatives, control a pair of crazy interior decorators (Cupid and Venus undercover), she is saddled with a grandmother determined to find the 'right' Southern gentleman husband for her. She just doesn't have the energy to fall in love. But Jason Stavros is just too tasty to resist, even though she gives it a good try. Jason Stavros thinks Merrill is a hot-house Southern belle dabbling at her law practice—until she moves in with him. Earthy, sexy, down-to-earth Merrill throws him and his preconceptions of her out the window.

With Jupiter's interference, the odds are not in favor of the Love Gods, but their reputations are at stake! Can Cupid and Venus save the dog, avoid the wrath of Jupiter, and show a Southern belle and a working man they were meant for each other forever?

About the Author

J. M. Jeffries is the pen name for writing team Jacqueline S. Hamilton and Miriam Pace.    Jacqueline is the proud owner of twenty-seven shades of red lipstick. At the ripe old age of twenty-three, she ran away from home to Europe and the Carribean to visit friends and relatives only because Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus wasn’t accepting applications. She is living proof that at age eighteen one doesn’t need to know what they want out of life. She is also living proof that at thirty five one doesn’t need to know what they want out of life. While she considers herself a happy person, Jackie fights daily with her envy issues. At college, she studied sociology because it was the only subject besides romance novels that attempted to explain the meaning of life. She considers herself a workaholic/procrastinator and would rather lay on the sofa patting her tummy, teaching her friend’s dog how to smoke, and then lie about it. She is passionately enamored of Steven Spielberg’s Animaniacs, William Faulkner novels, and "The New Detectives: a Study of Forensic Science" on the Discovery Channel.  **

Miriam is the only woman in the world with her own hand cream collection which she uses everywhere on her body except her hands. Her greatest beauty secret is lip balm for the elbows. She has the refinement of a Victorian lady, the intelligence of a Nobel Prize Laureate, and when the stars are straight and the moon is full, she has the vocabulary of a truck driver. Miriam truly believes the only reason she received a Masters Degree in English was because her instructors were too afraid she’d come back. She has been known to level mountain ranges with the lift of an eyebrow. But her friends consider her generous, warm and a closet dominatrix. Miriam knew she would marry her husband of twenty-nine years after their first date, but made him wait a whole year before she said, "I do," so he could have the illusion he was the pursuer. She is known as the curator of the Pace Zoo. At any time one can find sheep in her back yard, a German Shepard mix-breed dog who thinks she’s a cat, kamikaze koi with an attitude, a Russian Blue cat who redefines the word lazy, and a Persian who needs Prozac.

More About the Author

J.M. Jeffries is the award winning writing team of Miriam Pace and Jacqueline Hamilton. Authors of romantic suspense and romantic comedies, they can't decide if they like killing people more than they like making them laugh. Miriam and Jackie have been writing together for eleven years, though it seems longer on occasion when they are on deadline. Miriam thinks Jackie is a master manipulator. Jackie knows Miriam is a bulldozer. Miriam has a deep and passionate love for shoes, amber jewelry and purebred cats. Jackie collects red lipsticks, Animaniacs memorabilia and steals pens.

Together they've written over twenty-two romance novels including the award winning Cold Case Crime Unit series for Genesis Press and the critically acclaimed Cupid series for Amber Quill books. They have also appeared in three anthologies.

Miriam and Jackie live in Southern California.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average romance novel!, May 8, 2000

This review is from: Cupid : The Bewildering Bequest (Paperback)
The Cupid series from JM Jeffries is wonderful! They include references to pop culture, include heroines with real jobs, bring along the Greek Gods and are a delight to read. Even if you don't normally like romance novels, I bet you'll like these. Wonderfully light and entertaining reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!, April 27, 2000

This review is from: Cupid : The Bewildering Bequest (Paperback)
Merrill Prescott's first and favorite client, Miss Eulalie Hermione, had died. Instead of leaving her millions to her two greedy relatives, she gave 2 million to each servant and 75 million and the estate to her dog, Psyche's Folly. Merrill and Jason Stavros (Eulalie's carpenter) were to have joint custody of Psyche's Folly. In addition, Merrill and Jason must live together on the estate. The two greedy relatives immediately began making plans to get their hands on the money!

Meanwhile, Venus and Cupid were doing their duties of bringing the two together. But when Jupiter saw Merrill, he decided she was to be his next conquest! So he ordered all the Gods and Goddesses to stay out of mortal affairs! That did not stop Venus and Cupid! They got some help from Eulalie and began hatching up schemes to bring Merrill and Jason together and foil Jupiter's plans for Merrill!

*** Hilarious! I could not put this one down and highly recommend it! ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun romantic romp, April 9, 2000
This review is from: Cupid : The Bewildering Bequest (Paperback)
Although the Greek Gods may have vanished from the thoughts of mankind, they still enjoy interfering in the lives of mortals when the mood strikes them. Cupid and his mother Venus become involved in the life of Jason Stavros when the human attends the funeral of a friend. Jason changed a tire for Cupid and Venus who are disguised as an elderly couple. Cupid gives Jason a gold coin that obligates them to find the mortal his soul mate, a task of Herculean proportion since the man suffered through a disastrous marriage and a brutal divorce.

Jason's resolve to avoid aristocratic Southern belles becomes tested when he attends the reading of his friend's will. He meets attorney Merrill Prescott of THE South Carolina Prescotts. Merrill and Jason have been named guardians of the deceased's beloved dog. The will stipulates that the two guardians and their ward live together. Neither Merrill nor Jason likes the idea, but out of love and respect for their departed friend, they agree to honor her last request. Proximity begins to lead to attraction, but before love can fully bloom, the couple must deal with avaricious relatives who want control of the $75 million estate.

CUPID: The Bewildering Bequest is an exciting romance that brings the Greek pantheon into the late twentieth century. The Greek Gods seem child-like as they gain pleasure from making life difficult for each other and those mortals they find interesting. J.M Jeffries creates a delightful romp starring an adorable cherub (as long as he points his arrows at some other reader), his oversexed mom, and two human targets. Fans of romantic fantasy will anxiously await Cupid's next victims.
