5.0 out of 5 stars Direct hit for the lone Arrow!, May 28, 2002
By
Vivienne Holt (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cupid Deranged (Audio CD)
Alan Merrill was the lead singer of the UK chart band The Arrows in the mid 70's. The band had their own weekly TV series in the UK, and a book was written about the band by Bill Harry. He has also been involved in a number of top flight projects since that band broke up in 1977.
On this his newest album, released in May 2002, Alan Merrill has re-recorded some of his hit singles from that mid 70s period, and also some new catchy tunes. Mr. Merrill is a master of the song "hook" and the melodies on this cd are very catchy indeed, and well sung. The songs vary in style, but are always rooted in basic rock n roll.
Joined by the experienced rhythm section of Peter Phipps (Gary Glitter band, Eurythmics, and XTC) on drums, and Dave Glover (currently of Slade) on bass, Alan Merrill's guitar and vocals are supported in a most complimentary way.
There is even a guest appearance by the reclusive Paris resident Sal Bernardi, long time veteran of the Ricki Lee Jones band, on blues harmonica and backing vocals on a few tracks.
All in all this is a good primer album for anyone interested in knowing about Alan Merrill, who, by the way, was the singer and songwriter of the original 1975 version of the classic "I love rock n roll", by his band The Arrows. That song, and other remakes of his past hits, are featured on this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years of Alan Merrill, June 5, 2002

Mrs A Minihan (glamrockangie) (Greater Manchester, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cupid Deranged (Audio CD)
This album is a stunning collection of Alan Merrills work over the past 30 years. He has gathered some classic tracks from his 70's band the "Arrows" and remixed them superbly.
There are some new songs too on this 21 track album. The one that stands out inparticular is the beautiful song entitled, " Miles Away".
There is a little bit of everything on this album, rock ,pop , rock and roll and blues. A must !
