Editorial Reviews

Review

Curandero is well worth the time to read to learn more and understand the importance of folk medicine. --Taos News

Like curanderismo, the book is part legend, part history and part folk tale. Readers will be entertained, enthralled and mystified. --Corpus-Christi Caller-Times TX

Curandero suceeds in revealing curanderismo as both a contemplative and a medical practice. . . It is a fascinating read. --Multicultural Review

From the Inside Flap

As a native New Mexican, I have long been aware of the curanderismo culture prevalent in my home state - particularly the rural areas. In Curandero: A Life in Mexican Folk Healing, Eliseo "Cheo" Torres gives us an authentic and first-hand account of the history of curanderismo in the Southwest United States and Mexico. He does this in a very readable memoir in which he mixes biographical snippets from the lives of some of the major curandero/as from the past century and a half, as well as an overview of various rituals, practices and herbs. There are even several pages of photographs which enhance the story. I can't think of a better introduction to curanderismo than this book. Highly recommended!

This book is a refreshing alternative to the type of New Age drivel that seems to dominate anything that smacks of the supernatural - like, in the case of curanderismo, that travesty of a book "Woman Who Glows in the Dark". This book depicts curanderismo as it really is in New Mexico and along the Mexican border, which is, of course, rooted in the culture of the Mexican homeland itself. I am from New Mexico and I am very familiar with this culture, and I think this book is spot on.

Informative and a beautiful tribute of the Curanderos that Dr. Torres has known all his life. I loved how he told a story, yet there is ample information and references to the practices and healing methods. I am so glad that he is bringing this art back and teaching it so that it can be continued on to another generation.

It was interesting to read about the same rituals and healing traditions that were practiced in my family when I was young.
