Book Description

It’s not every day that a newborn baby is stuffed inside a cardboard box, folded up and left in the gutter. Nick Santinelli steers a huge New York City street sweeper around a corner and sees the box lying just ahead. He gets out and picks it up, both surprised and shocked at what he finds inside. He brings the sleeping baby home and only blocks from his route. “Sandy!” he called out, as soon as he entered the living room. Her hair, still wet from a shower, his girlfriend sat on the couch drying it. “What are you doing home, Hon?” “Oh, nothing important…just a baby I found in the street.” She instantly stopped drying her hair, holding the still pose and replaying what she just heard inside her mind, or what she thought she just heard. No, that could not have been what he said. She turned to him with a questioning look. “What did you just say?” Sandy, his longtime girlfriend, decides they should not report anything and raise the baby themselves. She’s dying of terminal cancer and wants this one chance to be a mother. After she passes away, Nick finds a Nanny who he believes he can trust. When the nanny steps out to buy cigarettes after leaving the now three year old to take his afternoon nap, Curby walks out of the apartment and becomes lost in the Brooklyn streets. Without a birth certificate, Nick can’t prove the boy is his. He battles the court and the assigned city caretakers from Children’s Services for custody of Curby where a surprise awaits everyone involved.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

About "Curby". Unlike my other works, I had, from the start, intended for "Curby" to be a short novel that I could offer to my readers as an introduction to my other books at a very affordable cost. The responses, although overwhelmingly positive, expressed a desire for a lengthier and in depth storyline. For those readers I share in their ideas, and so, perhaps someday in the future, "Curby" can return to face his birth mother.

About the Author

Writing came late in life for me. I believe the desire had always been there, however, the everyday challenges of getting through the work week kept me too busy to find enough time for myself and the pursuit of what I really wanted to do.
By far, the biggest rewards with finishing "Yesterday in the Cavern's Dark" is acknowledgement and sharing my most inner thoughts with you the reader. I relish feed back-- your reviews. If I could, I would join you in some quaint coffee shop nearby so I could explain how close to the heart this novel was for me to write. There you and I would sit as I listen and see in your eyes the scenes as they played out for you. And finally, to thank you for your interest. --Adrian Del Valle/ardelvalle45@yahoo.com

3.0 out of 5 stars it was okay.. December 18, 2013

At times the book read kind of juvenile.. Like something I'd have written in middle school.. Story also seemed 'rushed' but I guess it was worth the hour or two to read it. Wouldn't pay any money for it though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curby November 19, 2013
Format:Paperback
This was one of the most heartwarming stories I've read in a long time. I read this book in 3 days. It's one of those books I could not put down. After reading about the author, I can understand where the emotion came from. Brought happy tears to my eyes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story May 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A short story. Never got to know the girlfriend. She wanted a child because she was dying of cancer. All of a sudden 3 years pass, her parents have arranged her funeral, and she's gone. next he gets involved with the neighbor. Characters aren't rounded out. The story was brief and flat.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited June 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Although the plot was interesting, I couldn't get past the lack of editing. There were so many grammatical and punctuation errors and cliche' expressions that I only got about halfway through the book and had to give up reading it. It's a shame because I really found the story touching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it September 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the story was short, I enjoyed it very much, I felt very sorry about the mom, the biological mother of the child who in her heart wanted the child just like thousands of young woman who go threw the same situation, but end up doing what the boyfriend says. This story has a good happy ending and for that I am happy that it ended in a good way, I even got emotional for a bit, so many children ripped away from loving carrying people. This was a great read for me. Thank you.
