Review
"Bob Flaws has once again produced an excellent book, this time for the layperson. Clear, concise, and easy to read, he presents a clear background to Chinese medicine so that the layperson can understand the basic principles of diagnosis, treatment, and etiology. He explains how one might do a self-diagnosis if they are unable to find a trained practitioner. He then details the various therapies available. There is a good discussion of deep relaxation. Other home remedies that he covers are Chinese aroma therapy, magnet therapy, light therapy (sunbathing), hydrotherapy, self-massage, flower therapy, and thread moxibustion.
Bob also provides information on Chinese medical research on PMS, how to find a qualified professional practitioner, further reading in the form of an annotated bibliography, a glossary, and an extensive book list.
This book is well balanced between explaining the concepts of Chinese medicine in its own terms and using language that the layperson can understand. He gives plenty of information that is extremely useful. This is one of a new series from Blue Poppy Press. The other titles include hayfever, arthritis, insomnia, depression, headaches, menopause, and breast health. -- From the Shiatsu Alumni Guild Newsletter, November, 1997

Sometimes when I teach, I kid around that my son is going to go to college thanks to my treating women's PMS. What I mean by this is that PMS and its related conditions have always formed the bulk of my Chinese gynecology practice. If I know about any disease in Chinese medicine, it has to be PMS. Therefore, I was especially enthusiastic about writing this volume in our "Curing" series. I've been treating women with PMS for more than 20 years, and I know that Chinese medicine is effective therapy for it. Some women can eliminate or control their PMS simply by using our "Three Free Therapies." Others need acupuncture and/or Chinese medicine in addition. However, if one follows their Chinese doctor's advice, the overwhelming majority of PMS can be eradicated in three menstrual cycles without using drugs and without any side effects. Some women feel they simply have to live with their PMS, that it is part of being a woman. But that simply is not so. Chinese medicine says that every premenstrual discomfort is a disease which can be and should be treated. If one eliminates the disease mechanisms at the root of PMS, one also cuts the root of other, more important diseases such as infertility, cervical dysplasia, and breast cancer. Therefore, I am especially happy to share with women the fruits of my 20 years of clinical experience in helping women eliminate their PMS.
