4.0 out of 5 stars Books on video
The Scholastic Video Collection is a limited set of Weston Woods's many excellent productions of video versions of children's picture books. Their intention is to create story hour readings of the books -- not animated films. Original illustrations are used, with minimal animation added for emphasis.
Think Reading Rainbow, not Spongebob Squarepants, and you will...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
By the title I would be led to believe that there is more than one George story. There is one George and a few others, one of which scares my 2 1/2 year old. I thought the stories would be animated. However, some (including George) are pictures from a story book. We love to read books, but videos should be more than photos of a story book. Would not recommend this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not animated, September 27, 2004
This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
Two out of three of the stories in this DVD are not animated. They are simply pictures from the book accompanied by a narrator reading the book. One could do this with a video camera.

1.0 out of 5 stars My 2 1/2 year old and I are very disappointed, January 6, 2007
This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
He finds the George "video" boring - this is not a child who watches videos or TV regularly, so this is surprising, since he LOVES Curious George. THIS IS NOT AN ANIMATION OF CURIOUS GEORGE. And the "other" tales of mischief are stories of other characters, some of which are scary to my 2 1/2 year old. He is still having nightmares from one of them.

This product should make it more clear that it is a compilation of a VARIETY of character-based stories. The marketing/advertising implies that this video is a compilation of Curious George videos --
had I known it was not, and that the Curious George story was not even a video, I would NOT have purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Animated, Not All George, But Not Bad Either, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
Although many reviewers (probably younger folks) give it as a reason to dislike the DVD, for my wife and I, the PRIMARY APPEAL of this early A/V version of Margaret and H.A. Rey's story is its filmstrip-like lack of animation, having both been saturated with filmstrips in parochial school. Our 2.5 year old and 1.5 year old LOVE it, as well as the other stories here. Honestly, I think the biggest reason for the poor ratings is the admittedly misleading front cover. Once past that, the video is just fine. It is in regular rotation in our house full of Curious George fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Term Is "Iconographic", February 23, 2006

This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
The stories that are photographed, not fully videoed are a style called "iconographic". It allows the child to enjoy the story and the illustrations.

Of course it would be far, far, better if the parent would actually sit down with the child and READ the book. But for those who use videos, at least this is exposing the child to some quality literature--and the story quality is far far better than most of the fully animated junk out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars rating on Curious George, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
This item was purchased for my two youngest grandsons. They have watched it many times and have enjoyed it. They had previously read the Curious George books so I knew they would enjoy the DVDs. The delivery of the videos was prompt. I had no problems and never hesitate to order from Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, June 6, 2007
This review is from: Curious George Rides a Bike... and More Tales of Mischief (Scholastic Video Collection: The Great White Man-Eating Shark, Flossie and the Fox, The Happy Lion, and Cat and Canary) (DVD)
This wasn't at all what I thought this movie was going to be. I don't know if I just didn't read the reviews or what, but it's only one story about George, and not animated. The other 4 stories are award winning books, some partially animated, some not. I bought it because my daughter loves curious George, but not this dvd, because it isn't about that monkey at all.
