Book Description

4 and upP and upCurious George
The world’s most curious monkey investigates new words in this lively picture dictionary for young children.

Curious George’s Dictionary is an engaging picture dictionary specially designed for children from preschool through first grade. Both entertaining and educationally sound, it features charming illustrations and reflects recent research in early childhood literacy, setting it apart from other picture dictionaries.

The main part of the dictionary is an A-Z section containing approximately six hundred words, six words to a page. Each word is illustrated with a full-color drawing, most of which have been created for this book by the popular illustrator Mary O’Keefe Young. More than half the illustrations include a sample sentence that puts the word in a familiar context.

A four-page illustrated story at the front of the book shows George learning how to look up words in his dictionary, drawing children in while introducing them to dictionary skills. At the end of the book, seven one- to two-page illustrations present groups of words related by simple themes such as colors, shapes, and numbers.

Developed in collaboration with educational consultants, the word list includes not only concrete objects but many more abstract concepts, like discover and enough, than do other picture dictionaries. Such words are essential for vocabulary development, and Curious George’s antics bring them alive, making them easy and fun for children to learn.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—This picture dictionary is intended to introduce children to basic words and concepts. It begins with four pages that show the mischievous monkey receiving the book as a birthday present and learning to use it. The pages that follow have six words each and include abstract notions such as "far," "some," and "before." The definitions are provided through pictures and simple sentences (although some terms, like "ant," "bag," and "dress," have only a picture). When a word has two meanings, for example, "can" and "wave," it has two entries: "The beans are in a can" and "George can paint." Illustrations are done in the style of H. A. Rey's work. This book has use as a resource to introduce the idea of a dictionary, and kids may learn some new words in the process. But from the library shelf, they're likely to choose the traditional stories instead.—Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL

More About the Author

I truly believe I have the most wonderful job in the world.

I began drawing at a very early age and I always experienced great joy in being creative. Much of my childhood I spent stretched out on the floor daydreaming and drawing whatever came to my mind.

A desire to improve my drawing and painting has always been important to me. I was determined to be able to render human faces and my brothers and sisters often called my drawings "Monkey People" It is interesting that now I illustrate new Curious George books!

When I was very young I loved the pictures in my books and I began to make books from my own stories and drew pictures to illustrate them. I still have a few of those little books!

I received a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. I learned so much there - about drawing, painting and illustrating children's books. I also learned how to present my work professionally so that I would get assignments as an illustrator. That was more than 25 years ago and now I go to Art Schools and share my experience with the students.

I have published more than 40 children's books as well as illustrations for book jackets, magazines, greeting cards and advertizing. In 2001 I began collaborating with Pat Schories on the Biscuit Series and have illustrated 16 of them. In 2004 I began illustrating new Curious George books. I truly enjoy drawing George in the style of H.A.Rey. I like the challenge of showing him having lots of fun and as usual, getting into some type of trouble. I am presently working on my 8th and 9th Curious George.

My studio is in my home in White Plains, NY. I was very fortunate to work and also to be available while my 3 children were growing up. It is wonderful to be able to take a short break every few hours and walk around my yard and enjoy the emerging flowers, our vegetable garden, the autumn leaves or the snow. I also enjoy hiking, skiing, running, kayaking and bicycling.

I often visit schools and libraries to talk to children about my work. They get so excited when they try to guess what I am drawing for them. To all the children and adults who enjoy picture books - thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars $11; What a bargain!, July 23, 2008
This review is from: Curious George's Dictionary (Hardcover)
I see why I'm the first reviewer. The discription says everything and plainly. But I'd like to add that if I were just learning to read/speak english, this would be my first purchase. This book was rated for 9-12 year old readers; well I bought it for my 5yr old grandson, but think that my 2yr old will enjoy it also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous... even for 2-year-old, November 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Curious George's Dictionary (Hardcover)
My 28-month-old loves Curious George, and he now loves this dictionary. He enjoys pointing to pictures and asking "What's George doing now?" Within a few days of receiving the book, we had covered every page.

The words in this book are pretty basic, and the visuals match the words very well. For young kids who love George, it's wonderful.
